The Impact of Displacement

I chose an article called “Forced Displacement: Refugees, Internally Displaced, and Host Communities” because it explains the impact of displacement on people including the mental health. There are “about 70.8 million refugees, internally displaced persons and asylum seekers” around the world. The reasons for these people to escape the place where there live are normally because they are being persecuted, or there is violence on the place they used to live, basically to escape violence. The “physical impact” they suffer is that they lose their homes and their neighborhoods to look for protection. But people do not normally see the impact on the mental health of the people, “Many suffer from trauma, and women and girls are at high risk of gender-based violence”. Displaced people suffer traumas and there is the possibility of suffering in the new places because “Accommodating the sudden arrival of masses of newcomers presents a challenge for host governments, putting further pressure on their ability to deliver basic services and infrastructure” There are so many people escaping that it is difficult to find enough services to keep them safe and healthy.

Paragraph Answering Question #2

In the story “Fiesta, 1980” the vomiting of the main character, Yunior, represents the idea that Yunior can not hold the secret of the family anymore. One of the literary devices that we can see in the story that shows the relationship between the father and the son is symbolism. One of the portions of the text where we can see this says “every time I was in that VW and Papi went above twenty miles an hour, I vomited. I’d never had trouble with cars before—that van was like my curse” (Diaz 27). The action of vomiting is a symbol for the secret that the narrator holds. The narrator feels sick only when he is in the van with his father because the narrator holds the secret about the relationship between the father and the waitress. This symbol means that it is very difficult for the narrator to keep the secret, and it makes him sick to know this about the father and not being able to tell the mother what is really happening.
