Assignment for week 20

The message of this cartoon is to show that nurses are superheroes trying to save people’s life. Of course, the situation we are currently facing with the virus shouldn’t be humorous. But the picture may be funny because it expresses superman in disguise as a nurse helping citizens. An issue I see is that nurses and doctors aren’t getting enough credit as they are risking their lives to help everyone in a crucial time like this. I feel that we should give credit when credit is due, and nurses are playing an important factor in society. They should always be considered as heroes even if this virus never existed, as they try to cure us when we are ill. Nurses go through a lot of hard work and studying just to help people manage their health. I like the picture I showed because nurses are getting the recognition they deserve, and the image disregards the image of masculinity. We always see men “saving the day” and don’t show respect for women. Every gender deserves to be credited for their hard work, but for this image, I like how women are being portrayed as heroes. We are all going through a difficult time in our lives. Some of us are just staying home, watching T.V. all day. However, we have nurses helping tons of clients every day, possibly exposing themselves to the virus. Through tough times, nurses and doctors are here to protect our health and keep everyone safe. Cartoons are a great way to make a point because it catches the eye of every age. What I am by my previous statement is that when people older people see a cartoon, it can remind them of their childhood. The younger audience may prefer a message through a cartoon because of an easier way to understand.

Assignment for the week of April 13

The podcast I listen to is called “Social Distance” by The Atlantic. It was about a female getting precise information from a professional on how summer is going to be like. The professional had his information because he is connected to people in the medical field, so this establishes his credibility. The people’s views that are being expressed are both the one asking questions and the one answering them. I didn’t get the name of them the one asking the question is just concerned people and their safety for the future. The one answering the question is just giving ideas on how the summer is ideally going to occur. The thing that interests me is the idea of not having to stay home over the summer. Katherine said her birthday was around the final weeks of July, and she asked Ed questions in regards to her celebrating her birthday. I got to admit something I learned may not be new to others but new to me. Ed said that the mask is used to not protect yourself but from stop spreading the disease to other people. Furthermore, he said that even if you have no symptoms, you can still give the virus to others. This all means that people have to get the right mindset when they go outside, we need to use the masks not just for our safety but for everyone. This podcast does influence me in the aspect of not going outside until we are allowed. Ed did say that we can enjoy our summer but under certain circumstances that include social distancing and recommends small gatherings. It gave me hope that we have the possibility to have a nice summer and not be home all day. I would recommend this podcast to my classmates because it’s a very brief conversation that can explain some of our concerns. I’m assuming that we all want to have a good experience this summer, and the podcast is giving us insight on how we might spend it. Some reactions I have is that I think the idea of going to the beach isn’t going to happen. Ed said we might be able to go the beach but be 6 feet away from each other, but I believe it’s better to not go. I saw that all NYC pools and beaches are being closed so I doubt people would go there. I don’t listen to podcasts unless it assigned to me. It’s not that I hate it but I rather do other things but in regards to getting the information, I feel like watching television news is better.

Proposal

Problem Statement:

How is COVID-19 going to be cleared and will vaccination be needed to end this problem?

Main points:
– will quarantine and social distancing be enough to prevent the virus

– will vaccination be required if it takes up to a year to create
– the outcome/results that are expected to happen once the pandemic is over

Purpose of study:

I am curious and willing to do research based on vaccine research and the coronavirus. Although we are currently trying to prevent the spread of the virus, there are still concerns arising if it will be enough to maintain good health.

Significance of Research:
I will collect data and use reliable information to help claim different theories.

assignment for the week April 6

I chose “Political Cartoons on the Coronavirus” because it shares real-life scenarios that are going on in the world today. An image that caught my attention shows that troops and firefighters wouldn’t be sent to do their tasks without the right equipment but yet people in the medical field have to work for PPE. PPE is personal protective equipment and nurses/doctors are risking their lives without the right equipment. I will also like to put out there that some doctors and nurses are getting the virus due to patients or traveling from their workplace from home. This is why I would like to thank them because they are doing all they can to help patients and we gave to thankful. Another picture I like was telling people to stay calm and stay home. There was various reason why that statement is important, first of this would stop the spreading of coronavirus. We are saving people’s life by remaining home. Also, I want to be outside as soon as possible so the more people remain in their homes they quicker we might get over this pandemic. I agree that it is hard to stay home but we should be considerate of others and think about our health. Another picture that got my attention is the one with the boat sinking. It shows that America got a lot of warnings and I assume that the picture means America should have paid more attention. Trump first said that this virus isn’t something serious. I also believed that I felt that people were overreacting to the virus. However, we were wrong and now facing the consequences of not taking early action to be prepared for this. All of the pictures shown are important but we should take in consideration that we will overcome this.

Displacement #2

Why Our Participation in the 2020 Census Matters Now More Than Ever
By

I chose this article because it the time of year where we all have to fill up the census. The census is an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individuals. This is important because it ensures public services and funding for schools, hospitals, and fire departments. It also plans new homes, businesses and improves neighborhoods. The last reason is that the census determines the seats in each state is allocated in the House of Representatives. However, displacement is shown in the census because Latinos are not participating due to their citizenship status. Latinos fear that they would get deported or problems would be created. Before people learned about Title 13, the US penal code, Latinos would not file in the census. In 2010 at least 770,000 Latinos were undercounted or unaccounted for entirely and we can clearly see how this shaped their lives. In addition, with the coronavirus crisis occurring this affects the community. Some may not have the availability to use the internet so they will be miscounted. It’s known that if you don’t file the census online then people who work for them would assist you by going to your house and do it for you. Since people are losing their jobs, the assistance would decrease and some people may not even be counted. Homeless people would also be displaced because, in March, a lot of services were going to be provided for them so that the homeless people would be counted in the census. Once again due to the coronavirus, most of the events got canceled. The 2020 census obviously is getting affected by the coronavirus. Latinos should be aware that their information would not be shared by other parties. With all this going on, the 2020 census should extend their deadlines.

Assignment #2

The film I chose for this assignment is Black Panther directed by Ryan Coogler. I chose this film because I was watching it with my younger brother recently and I remembered watching it for the first time last semester. An interesting aspect of the film is that displacement was shown both in a positive and negative manner. For example, the city of Wakanda goes through displacement because they are isolated from the world. People around the world perceived Wakanda as a poor country in Africa. However, Wakanda has the most valuable resource known as vibranium. According to the marvel series, vibranium is the cure to end humanity’s problems and create products that help people’s life. The leaders of Wakanda always kept it, as a rule, to never let the outside world know about their resources and displacement is clearly shown. The reason why people in Wakanda has multiple disputes on the controversy of sharing vibranium is that people want to use the resource to help others while the leaders don’t believe it’s the proper solution. For instance, displacement is shown in Erick Killmonger and his father because they want to help people of their own skin color by exposing vibranium to the world. However, T’Challa, known as the Black Panther, doesn’t want to let down the previous leaders and his roots/traditions. In the citizens of Wakanda’s perspective, displacement is shown because it is embedded in black history that those of the superior race, the Europeans, would take away the vibranium and use it for greed. This ideology that both sides have bring discomfort in their community and create tension between T’Challa and Erick Killmonger. The displacement of acquiring vibranium is both positive and negative. The positive side is that the people living in Wakanda remain safe and healthy for a long period of time. The negative aspect is that they don’t help other countries from their suffering. A statement was said by Erick Killmoger’s father that was that slavery could have possibly ended because the people of color would have better weapons to protect themselves. T’Challa at the end of the story exposed the displacement by telling people about vibranium in the United Nation conference. Another way I saw displacement in the film was women empowerment. This displacement is seen in a job way because women aren’t appreciated in our culture. But in this film we see women have powerful roles aren’t depicted with the same power as men. To sum up, displacement was shown in Black Panther and I liked to write about this because the film has a powerful message.
