Food Media Review #2

Genre: TV Show – MasterChef

I decided to insert on this blog TV Show clip of MasterChef. This clip of MasterChef is about a competition of who cooks better a Vegan plate at MasterChef. I enjoyed watching this episode as part of the TV Show MasterChef.

I can tell you that Gordon Ramsay is one of my favorites chefs that I have heard. His cooking recipes and techniques are the best. I love his cooking skills. In this clip, Gordon Ramsay seems to not like the idea of having to cook a vegan plate. As he says in the video, he is not used to cooking vegan meals. Usually at MasterChef the people at the show cook meat meaning that MasterChef consists of a meat plate. So he found it sort of difficult on cooking a vegan meal. However, the competitor; Madelaine Petsch had an advantage because she is a vegetarian. The fact that she was vegan allowed her on knowing what exactly to cook as part of her vegan plate competition with Gordon Ramsay.

It was fun watching a very famous chef compete with the actress; Madelaine Petsch. The face that Gordon Ramsey made was funny when he looked at all the ingredients that he had to cook for the vegan plate. He could not believe the fact that his ingredients included mainly plant-food production. He saw many vegetable ingredients to use for his plate competition. However, when Madelaine Petsch saw the same ingredients as Gordon Ramsay in her cooking space, she did not get shocked or anything. Since she is vegan for her it was normal compared to Gordon Ramsey. Instead, she kept laughing at the fact that Ramsey had to do a vegan plate something he didn’t do at MasterChef.

If I were to do a vegan plate it will be challenging for me. This is due to the reason that I have never cooked any vegan meal. I have always been used to having meat on my lunch and dinner meal. If I were to think of eating vegetable-related meals for a day well, I do not think I would be able to handle it. I am not a fan of vegetables. I personally don’t like too natural meals. What I mean by this is that I do not like too many healthy food plates. I feel that I can’t pass by my week if I do not eat at least 2-3 a week fried-food plate. It is not that I am saying that vegetables or any other healthy food is bad. On the contrary, it’s great to have healthy food on our body to have a positive quality of life within ourselves.

Overall, I can relate to Gordon Ramsay when he was preparing to cook the vegan plate at MasterChef. I liked watching this TV Show Clip. Since am planning to do a video of myself being vegan for a day as part of my creative re-mix project then, watching this clip reminds me that I will be having to cook a vegan dish.

Melanie Gonzalez – Creative Re-Mix Plan

What I am planning for my Creative Re-Mix is to make a commercial video or an advertising flyer. This connects to my research question because my question is about McDonald’s marketing so I plan to use advertising techniques to display my research. My steps to execute this decided which advertising method I would like to use, plan out how to create, and lastly put it all together. I am concerned that I have is being able to incorporate all my ideas into my creative remix. Some advice that would help is knowing what part of advertising attracts you the most?

Plan for Creative Re-Mix

I am planning to interview people on the topic I’m researching on. I feel like many people have different opinions on my topic so I wanted to interview 2 to 3 people to see what they think, and how their opinions are different. I would have to come up with a list of questions I could ask in the interview. An obstacle I might face is putting all the interviews together in one paper and making it coherent. Some advice that might Assist me is should I write down the interview response or record them.

Mindy Hong Creative Re-Mix Plan

For my creative remix, my plan is to create a menu and have people pick options on what they would choose from it. This connects to my research question because it will show their behavior on healthier options. In order to execute my plan, I will have to create the menu first and then come up with some questions to ask. Some obstacles that I am concerned about is not knowing what exactly are “healthier” options that I can include in my menu. I guess some advice that might assist me with thinking through and executing this project is if I should target a specific group or if I should include something specific. I am wondering what exactly I can do in order for people to answer honestly.

Creative remix brainstorm

  • I am planning to give a inside look at what happens when you place an ubereats order
  • It connects to my research question because you’ll see how much the delivery worker makes etc
  • I may have trouble finding specific info on restaurants
  • Honestly, I just have to brainstorm more and try to find as much details as possible

Creative Re-mix

  • I am planning to do a photo collage of posts that I see on Instagram or TikTok that show foods, and diets.
  • This connects to my research question because it will be giving a demonstration of what I tend to see on my newsfeed that influences food choices.
  • I will be saving and/or screenshotting posts, hashtags, and pages that are food-related and as well have an influence on a lot of our food choices.
  • Something I am concern about is probably not finding the right way to put them together and as well finding it hard to get things that will be relevant to my research questions.
  • Something that might be helpful to me is like getting some of your ideas of the post that you see in pages that you follow that have had an impact on the way you think when it comes to eating certain things.

For my second food media review, I decided to pick a YouTube video from Delish titled “I Turned The Smelliest Fruit in the World Into The Best No-Bake Pie”. One reason why I decided to do my review on this video is because of my own personal experience with the fruit. In this video, the smelliest fruit is referring to durian. Durian is a fruit that is spiky and is usually known for its strong odor. In the video, Saeng, the cooking instructor and chef, brings up different kinds of durian and even ones that are packaged. Later on, he demonstrates how to cut into a durian and how to use the durian to make a pie. First, Saeng tests out the packaged durian from Malaysia and Thailand. When you open up these packaged durian or cut into any durian, there will be a smell and most people will describe the smell as a foul smell. However, this smell does not stop Saeng from testing and trying out how packaged durian is different from a fresh durian. After testing two different packaged durians, he mentioned that the Malaysian one is more creamier and a good option for beginners. As for the Thailand durian, it is stronger and has a clear taste of durian. Going on, he shows how to cut open the whole fruit. Durian is weirdly shaped so in order to know where to actually cut open the fruit, you have to look for cracks. After demonstrating how to cut a durian, he goes on to the main point of the video which is to make a pie out of durian. I found this no-bake pie really interesting because growing up eating durian, I never really thought about a durian pie. Saeng showed step by step on how to make the pie and it makes me want to make a durian pie when the fruit is in season. One thing that I did learn in this video that was shocking to me was in the beginning when he mentioned how there are many parts of the world in Southeast Asia where durian is banned. The reason for a durian banned is due to its smell. I never thought of how a durian smell would cause the different places to put a ban into it.

While I was watching the video, I personally don’t really have a problem with durian mainly because growing up I always ate it. In some cases, I don’t even smell the strong odor that most people describe it as. I feel that if you grow up eating durian, you’re more likely to enjoy it and you won’t mind the smell. For example, my cousins never grew up eating durian and until this day, they won’t eat it. One thing that I do want to try in the future after watching this video is the no-bake pie. It seemed fairly easy and it would make up a good snack or dessert. Finally, I would say that if anyone has a chance to come across this fruit, I would say to give it a try despite the smell even though no one likes to eat stuff with an unpleasant smell. You really don’t know whether the food tastes good or not by just smelling it.

I can’t provide a direct link since I watched this show through my account, but it is accessibly on HBOMax.

For this second review, I am reviewing an episode of Selena + Chef  season 2 episode 5. First and foremost, the reason I decided to review this show specifically is because I am a fan of Selena Gomez and her personality. The show basically films Selena learning how to cook different dishes. She doesn’t know how to cook and for some reason I find it funny watching people learn how to cook, although my mom says i’m just like her in that regard. Most of the show was filmed during quarantine and in each episode Selena has a one on one video call with a famous professional chef and they teach her how to make a dish of their choice. For this episode specifically, Selena learns how to make a dish from Singer/ Songwriter and now chef Kelis Rogers. Also, a fun fact to note she sang the popular song Milkshake and I find her now being on a cooking show both funny and ironic. For this episode, Kelis teaches Selena how to make an Oxtail Yuca Poutine. I for one was really intrigued by this dish because Oxtail is a staple dish of my Trinidadian culture. It is something I or my mom cook almost every week and I grew up eating it along with many other Caribeans. It is such a delicacy in my country that it is not something you normally see on a mainstream cooking network unless its an episode of Anthony Bourdain. It was personally really cool to see something I eat almost everyday on TV, that was definitely a small win for me and part of what attracted me to this episode the most. The dish itself consisted of Oxtail, Yuca, Rosemary, Yellow Onions, Thyme, Balsamic Vinegar, Smoked paprika, and so much more. For dessert, she chose to teach Selena how to make a Rosemary Apple Cranberry Buckle consisting of Apples, cranberries, cinamon, etc. They started off by using a pressure cooker to cook the oxtail, which was honestly crazy to see. Normally, oxtail is boiled instead. There were little moments were Selena struggled A LOT. She honestly can’t cook, but she tries and that is what makes it entertaining and worthwhile. Throughout the episode her grandfather makes funny remarks in th background making fun of how she holds a knife. There was one moment where it took her and 3 of her bestfriends to try and get her pressure cooker open. It was kind of sad to watch, but 100% relatable. In the end though Selena pulled through and actually made the dish really well. Even though I can cook, I am definitely not gifted in the Kitchen and it is really cool to see someone else struggle as much as I have on TV. I highly recommend this show to anyone, even if you don’t like cooking shows you will definitely laugh or learn something.

Food Review 1

Link: Netflix- Cupcake Wars

I have been watching this show for years here and there. It is very interesting to watch the type of judgment that is given to these strangers and their baking skills. In their own hometowns, they are considered “the best,” but on this show, it is really revealed what they care about and show their real baking skills. The judgment that is given is at times harsh because these judges are there to help these bakers bake their cupcakes better in the next level. The prize is a great prize to be competitive towards because these bakers really do end up trying their best to win. There are many points in the show where these bakers get frustrated because of the fact that they are also timed.

These bakers are timed while baking spontaneous ingredients into a cupcake. These weird mixtures are meant to test these baker’s skills and how “great” of a baker they are. The bakers are given a couple options of odd foods that you would not really expect to go into a cupcake. They have to choose these ingredients wisely and understand that they need to make a cupcake out of it and interpret all of the items. The weird combinations are not meant to go together, but these bakers are meant to make these cupcakes taste out of this world. The judges have to taste the different ingredients that they are given in order to go onto the next round. Not only do they have to taste these weird combinations in the cupcakes, but these cakes need to be great in texture, consistency, and should have a good taste to them as well.

Moreover, these bakers are under pressure the whole time. I think that this helps the bakers use their time in a smart way because they are on their feet the whole time, obviously while baking, but It helps them be quick about their thinking as to how they will bake these cakes and how they are supposed to make their substances in the certain time they have. It’s at many times very suspenseful to watch because of how fast they are working, and the type of mess-ups that backtracks them. It’s also intriguing to see how frustrated they tend to get because of the pressure they are under and also the fact that they are in competition with other bakers from other parts of the world really gives them that push to do their best. I recommend this show if you are into competitive types of shows and also if you are interested in learning more about how bakers make cupcakes even if it comes to mixing the weirdest types of food combinations.

Destiny Ingles Food Media Review#2

A Netflix show that I have been watching is called “Somebody Feed Phil” Phil Rosenthal is an American tv writer and producer. He is the writer and producer of the famous sitcom show “Everybody Loves Raymond”. In his Netflix show series Phil travels around the world to different states and countries. Each episode is an episode based on the new country and place he visited.

The first episode in the series he travels to Rio De Janeiro. He arrived just in time for carnival. Carnival is an annual Brazilian festival held the Friday afternoon before Ash Wednesday at noon, which marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day period before Easter. In this episode Phil connects with some of the locals at the carnival festival and they dance for many hours. Throughout this episode he continues to connect with locals and travels within the country to try diffeerent food locations.

In a food market in Brazil he samples different fruits. He ends up really enjoying the fruit and he mentions that the fruit tastes a lot different than it does in America. The fruit he tried was dragonfruit and in this episode it looked a lot brighter than it does in America but when he tasted it he said it actually tasted a lot more simpler than it does here. I thought that this was interesting because food tastes diffeerent and looks different all over. He also tries caipirinhas which is Brazil’s national cocktail made with lime, sugar, and cachaça. While drinking this he talks with some locals and they said that with this drink they would drink it to heal sicknesses. I think that this was really interesting because through food there is history. To Americans we think that it is probably just an alcoholic drink but to Brazilians it’s a drink that has helped cure many illnesses such as the Spanish flu.

Throughout the show he tastes different foods and not only does he connect with the owners of these businesses he connects with random people on the street and he gets to know them on a personal level. A place he visited was a cooking school and when they gathered a table they talked about Rio as a whole. They talked about the poor areas of Rio and how a lot of the young people are focused on bad things like gang violence, stealing, robbing, and there is no safe haven for them. Through this cooking school one of the members hopes to change people’s lives and help them do more with their lives then staying in these poor areas of Rio filled with corruption. This television show is very interesting but also very important because he connects with people through the food.
