I feel like inviting guest speakers like Andy offers a unique perspective on how to approach creative writing. He has successfully published a large variety of genres such as historical or science fiction. He emphasizes how is important it is to set a word count for yourself every day. It would allow us more room for revision and prevent us from writing garbage with adrenaline. Andy also breaks the notion of how I generally perceive a writer. Instead of constantly composing new chapters, he has a side job of a copywriter for additional income. His talk is truly inspirational and insightful. I wouldn’t mind him reading my work in the future.
Through his communication process, I notice that he is really intelligent and knowledgeable about his goals and purposes. I also notice that time management plays a big role in his daily life. I wonder if he could give more advice about what it means to be a good writer and why is it important in this century? Overall, it was really meaningful and I learned a lot from him, specifically he’s enthusiasm is really wonderful.
Andy Marino’s speech helped me on how to start my fiction story. Before hearing Andy Marino, I was lost on where to start my story and what details to add to my writing. Andy said the best part to start is, to begin with, the most exciting part and each chapter should leave some clues to lead up to the climax. Before meeting Andy, I thought professional writers’ main job was just to write their story but now I know that writers write for fun during their free time and then they have to go to work. His talk is inspirational and guest speakers like Andy are a good help to English classes at Baruch.
From my perspective, it was really beneficial talk of Andy Marino, because we heard some new information and advice of how to write better and got response to any questions we had regarding his process of writing and experience in that field.
In addition,It was always challenging for me to write any essays and stories, however, Andy shared his methods, tactics and experience with us, which helped me change my approach regarding the writing.
Moreover, I found that writing in the early morning works for me too as well as revision during the week rather than writing essay at night in a rush and stressbefore the deadline.
My view regarding the Andy’s assessment of our essays is pretty positive, because it is great pleasure to receive the feedback from the writer, who was able to write books on different topics and got them published. I think it would be very helpful in our writing process to show our mistakes and guide us through the process of how to write stories better.
Overall, I noticed that guest lectures are really good addition to our class!
After hearing from Andy Marino, I got to know what was the life of an author really liked. It was very different then what I thought before, I thought the job of an author was to just write and write every day. His talk impact on how I decide to write or structure my short story. Especially, the part when he talks about the method of a man pushing the giant rock up the mountain. He talks about how don’t spend too much time giving background information, because your readers are not interested in those parts but are more interested in what is going on next. And he talks about how we should not give away things too fast, instead, we should give little clues on the way to keep the readers’ attention and make them wonder about what is going to happen next. I feel that the guest speakers like Andy are a good addition to writing/English classes at Baruch because he gives us some useful tips that we could use to write a good story.
After meeting Andy Marino, I learned a lot about the author’s lifestyle and how they mange their side job with writing is really inspirational. His speech improved my thinking and writing skills about fiction stories. I was confused how authors can keep audience’s attention until the end of the story but I learned from Andy that we should give little clues in the story to keep the audience’s attention. I was not sure about the difference between showing/telling the story but Andy’s explanation made it clear to me how fiction story should be. I think inviting guests in the class is helpful because we get to know new ideas about writing and I’m willing to share my story with Andy and get more feedback about it.
The way Andy approaches fictional writing was interesting to me because it inspired me to write something more creative. I found the “boulder” example significant because I didn’t know how to start a fictional story when I was told to write a brief draft, since I wasn’t mentally prepared. Another important thing that I took note of was the strategy of leaving some clues in each section/chapter as the story progresses because it is a good way to entertain readers by letting them anticipate the ending of the story. Andy’s talk made me realized that a professional writer don’t need to spend all their time on writing because before his talk, I thought professional writers spend all their time thinking and writing and planning the plot of the story. Also, I think inviting guest speakers like Andy to English classes is beneficial for students because they could share their experience of writing.
Having Andy Marino come in as a guest speaker changed the way I thought authors. Before he came, I used to think that authors were really crammed up to a desk and writing for hours straight. I thought they had certain deadlines to meet and may get stressed it to get their work done. However, after meeting Andy, I realized the life of an author is pretty normal. They have other side jobs and a regular routine. I did find his speech inspiration since I found out that he always manages to find some time in his day to write at least a thousand words each day to create his books. This part stood out to me because it shows that authors are organized and don’t have a necessary deadline to meet, meaning they don’t have unnecessary stress put onto them. The idea of Andy reading/accessing my work sounds beneficial for me because it’ll be nice to receive feedback from an author with published books. I feel that guest speakers like Andy are a good addition to writing/English classes because he can share his experience to other students and possibly inspire them one way or another.
Andy surprised me in many ways in term of writing approaches. Before, my perspective of writing was that writers had to spend most of their life on writing which for me was far from being fun. His talk changed my perspective about writing from writing is too difficult to It is not that bad and it might be actually fun to write. Now, I see professional writers as regular people that also practice and set schedules around their life and stick to it. Having Andy inspired me so much in many ways especially how one idea can develop into something big and interesting. His sketch on the person ready to kick the rock changed my whole idea on how to approach a writing assignments and any writing in general. I understand that I should be more focus to get to the point at the same time keeping my readers or audiences interested on my piece. I am looking forward for Andy to see our works and provide us with feedbacks and suggestions. Finally, I think Baruch should provide a person like Andy to every English class to make writing easier to students and to make it seem very simple in order to motivate students to succeed in writing.
After Andy came into the classroom to talk about his writing process, it really helped me get started on the problem I have in my story. I had a problem with the conflict of the story and the way I should end the story. His mountain boulder picture really helped me with how I should outline my story. Andy coming into the classroom is a great thing to do and a good addition to ENG 2150 and ENG 2150T. Andy coming in to the classroom not only helps us as writers but also help us see what the world of writing is like. Before coming into the classroom, I thought the only thing a writer does is write and edit. Now, I see that he is doing more meetings, and doing other jobs to make a living while he is writing a new book. To me his talk was more informative than inspirational. I felt that the talk was mostly facts and tips that would help with writing. I think it would be a great thing if Andy can read our writing and giving feedback.
Meeting Andy Marino was a wonderful experience not just as a student but as a writer. He talked to us like we were professional writer. I like how he depicted writing writing as something really easy because many students find it hard. For my story he affects me in a lot of way because now I don’t even know how my story will end, it just depends on how my mind will want to end it ( Now I am writing stress free). Now I actually know that professional writers have a lot of fun while writing their story, I mean it is not a boring experience. I like the part where he explains that he write in the morning and I really like that idea because when you wake up your mind is fresh and you are more likely to write a better paragraph( You won’t write just because you have to, but i think you have a better imagination after a good night of sleep). Furthermore, I want more people like Andy to come and share their experience so student will be more relax with the idea of writing in gneral.
