The child in the room is essentially the scapegoat or sacrifice for people’s happiness. All of the citizens of Omelas seem to have accepted the idea that their prosperity depends solely on the misery of that single child. Those that leave the place realized the social injustices but they don’t want to jeopardize the other people’s happiness. I personally think the moral of the story is that we all have an innate ability to differentiate what right and wrong. But we must resist selfishness and bandwagoning other people’s morality.
The child in the room represents injustice, such that the child was a sacrifice in order to keep the rest of the citizens in Omelas happy. The misery the child felt is exchanged for happiness that the rest of the people felt, showing selfishness in the people. Many wanted to help the child, but in the end, they couldn’t since they value happiness so much, they’re willing to have him as a scapegoat. The moral of the story is that happiness can’t happen without someone’s suffering.
The child in the room represents inequality and injustice in society. The child was sacrificed for the happiness of the people of Omelas. I think the moral of the story is that happiness does not depend on one’s suffering. After learning about the torture of the boy, people were horrified about it and left Omelas because they know it is wrong and they do not want their get happiness from a suffering child.
The child in the room could represent the ignorance and selfishness of people. Citizens of Omelas don’t understand why and how the misery child provides happiness, but since they were told and believed he did, they accept and allow the tortures. The moral of the story is happiness doesn’t just appear, someone has to be sacrificing something. However, it’s usually taken for granted. It could be you, a friend, a family member, or someone you don’t know.
The story was interesting to read and had deep meaning.
From my perspective, the locked child was a symbolism of injustice happening to some people and a type of “sacrifice” for someone’s happiness. The story gave clear example of people, who were ready to do whatever needs to be done in order to be happy, but the question is: were they happy knowing that someone was locked for their happiness? I think that some of them could be, but most of them felt themselves guilty in the end. Great respect for those people, who did not want anyone to sacrifice for their happiness and started their own way to find other place and create their happiness themselves.
Overall, the moral of the story is that happiness is not about building it on someones sadness or sacrifice. It is about finding your own way to be happy.
The child in the room can represent the selfish people that sacrifice others for their own benefits. The author used as a way to show the reader, on how these people believe that they can sacrifice their kids, abusing and mistreating them for their own willings and happiness. Just like in the stories it says, “To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for that single, small improvement: to throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of the happiness of one.” This shows what they believe in their society is totally different than the regular society. For those people who left Omelas they never go back, I think that is because they found what is right for them. I think the moral of the story is that in order to find true happiness or true freedom, it is important for you to stand up for what is right and wrong. Not all traditions should be followed.
The child in the room represent the sacrifice behind the happiness of people from Omelas. In other word this shows us how selfish people are when it comes to their happiness and their well being. Furthermore, if we look between the lines of the story, we are tempted to look at the world we are living in today. The moral of the story is not all traditions are good to follow and when something bother you try to stand against it because if you run away like some of the people in Omelas, you will always run away whenever something bothers you.
The child in the room represents an object that could bring happiness to Omelas. Most of the citizens in Omelas believe that it is not worth it to exchange for one happiness and destroy thousands of happiness, so they didn’t bother doing anything, or they are unable to do anything. Overall, they might pity the child, but are not willing to make change. I think the moral of this story is something or someone must be sacrificed in order to bring happiness to everyone. However, some citizens of Omelas are unable to accept that kind of happiness due to the sacrifice of someone else, so they left the city. I think the moral is related to utilitarianism, the idea that an action is right if it brings greater happiness.
The child represents the inequality and inhumanity found in society. People at Omelas can live with the child’s concept in the basement as they live a happy life, and the child is not directly affected. It’s used as a scapegoat for others suffering so that the others can live in comfort and joy. One major theme in this novel is conflict and freedom. The basement itself represents freedom, and how simply those in power at Omelas will take away the rights of an individual without offering any reason.
The child sacrifice himself to keep the people Omelas happy. People in the story are selfish enough to not care about the torture he goes through. Even in the reality it happens that someone sacrifices their happiness to keep others happy. sometimes people sacrifices their happiness to keep their families happy and others around them. If people consider everyone equal as them and think their happiness also matters then I think some people will not have to sacrifice and stay happy as others. The theme of the story is one’s selfishness can harm others badly.

The baby is a representation of unfairness and symbolizes the sacrifices people can make to satisfy their ego just so they can be happy. In Omelas, people think happiness worth to sacrifice anything even a baby, but what they don’t know is that happiness is free when selfishness and unfairness is not on the way. The moral of the story is that some people have to lose or sacrifice themselves for other to feel happy and satisfy.
The child in the room represents the darkness and bad tragedy because he sacrificed himself for others peaceful life. Even, through his journey, one of his biggest purpose was sacrificing himself by accepting his destiny. The moral of this story is that sometimes in order to gain something you have to suffer something.
