the persistence of memory

The painting I choose is the persistence of memory , which is painted by Salvador dali in 1931.

To begin with, Dalí was a famous Spanish painter (1904-1989).  He is known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work, just like we see in the persistence of memory. Dalí’’s  interest also lies in film, sculpture, and photography. Also, he has contributed a lot to surrealism.

The persistence of memory, also known as “the soft watches”, is probably the most famous Surrealism painting among his work. If we take a look at this painting, we can easily find a lot of bizarre images in it. The orange clock at the left-side of painting is covered in ants and there are three soft watches on the trees, tables and the monster.

His painting is kind of like dream, since in reality, all of the watches are hard , while in this painting, the watches , or “the time” are soft. In other words, they are bent and they can even hang on a tree, which will never happen in reality. More interestingly, the orange clock seems to be fully attractive to these ants, since it is covered by these ants . However, in real word, I never see a single ant is attracted to some mental clock ever. What represents in this painting is totally different with our common sense. Although nothing is real in this painting, Dalí works on the detail of this painting so that the viewers can tell how realistic this painting is . I guess that is what surrealism means: the theme are always absurd, but the details are so real. Thus, to some extent, it reminds of me the Metamorphosis.

Actually, when I arrive the museum, I am just wandering aimlessly. I don’t know which work I will choose to explain modernism until I see the persistence of memory. When I first glanced at this piece of work, I know I am going to work on it.  Though I don’t know a lot in art, I do know that is a great work on modernism. And since it is so great and so well-known, this work itself must have some specific modernism for me to work on. That’s why I choose this work.

I do still have some questions about his work.  Though people always talk about how great and how famous this , I still don’t know what the painter want to express through all this bizarre images : bent watches , ants , orange clock and the little monster lied on the ground. What does Dalí try to say to us?

Text to real world connection

This short novel is written during the New Culture movement in China. In short, New Culture movement is all about new value against traditional value. In literature field, leaders of the movement want to give up using Confucianism in their work and use vernacular instead. While as for the political filed, they want to build a “ new China” , unlike republic of  china, “new China” needs to be more democratic and stronger.

The main character, wei-fu , used to be a fighter in Chinese revolution, has changed a lot. In the past, wei-fu and author went together to the Tutelary God’s Temple to pull off the images’ beards, how all day long we used to discuss methods of revolutionizing China until we even came to blows.  However, now, he has surrendered to the life and also, the traditional value . He has to go back to teach Confucianism he used to hate in the school.

While describing this character, though Lu doesn’t make any comment on the transformation of his old friend, I would like to believe that Lu is extremely  disappointed at him when he knows wei-fu gives up the value he used to believe in, since himself is one leader of new culture movement.

Through producing the implied criticism , Lu shows that revolution is not easy at all, especially with so much and heavy traditional value  stop you from fighting  , but Lu himself  will stick to what he believe in and never give up.

By making the statement clearly, this article moves a lot of Chinese. Furthermore, this article impact the real world deeply by  encouraging most of his readers to devote themselves in to upcoming revolution which aims to break the corrupt government and society.

introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Le Qi, coming from china, and I am 21 years old. By the way, Le means ‘happiness’ in Chinese. I am a transfer student form southwestern university of economy and finance (it’s in china). I decided to further my study in accounting major in baruch during my third year in university. Actually, this is my first time been to USA and I have to say that there are a lot differences between China and USA.

Outside school, I am a huge fan of diving. I get my ow(stands for open water) certification at my 18 in Malaysia. Then after one year, I get my advanced divers certification. During last summer, I eventually passed the exam and get the advanced open water certification in cancun. In fact, I am planning to go to Palau and try cave diving and see if I can get the rescue diver certification with my friends during this spring break.

There are several good reasons why I love diving so much. First, I was born in a small town nearby the sea, and I am raised in there until I was 7. During my entire childhood, I spend whole day watching the sea, playing at beach. Thus, i guess that I am emotionally attached to sea and diving is apparently the best way to get close the sea and study sea. Although my family moved to shanghai soon after my birth. Another reason is that the view in the sea is stunning. Also, you will see lot of beautiful sea creatures, such as Sponge, octopus, jellyfishes, coral and even whale and sharks if you get lucky. Last, it feels like on the different planet when I am under the sea. You can hear hardly nothing expect your breath. This kind of silence makes me think that I am separated from human civilization and actually makes me think about my life.
