Both of these articles are in regard to the New York subway system and its imperfections as well as comparable subway systems New York should learn from. In Jugal Patel’s article he talks about how the New York subway system does not accommodate for people with disabilities. The subway is a vital transportation system for New Yorkers everyday. People use the subway to get to work, school, meet up with friends, and to simply go to a restaurant. The subway is the most important system but for some people it can be difficult to use. In a city where more than 550,000 people have a walking disability, most of them already live in far from a subway station. Of the working subway stations only a quarter of them have working elevators which is one of the lowest in the world of all the transit systems in the world like Moscow, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and London. People with disabilities who live 10 min or further often don’t or find it very hard to walk or stand around for long periods of time. Living in the city myself I notice people walking with canes and strollers having difficulties getting down the stairs to the subway cart and think New York should implement some elevator or and electric staircase to make it easier for patrons to move up and down from the subways. In other highly populated cities the subway systems are much cleaner, efficient and disability friendly. In Tokyo where transportation systems like subways are the only form of transportation, finding room can be hard. Although carts usually fill up fast and are crammed to the last person, everyone has mutual respect for everyone else as there are staff to help people board the train. As well as this there are other rules implemented into the system like having a separate cart for the disabled, and woman children. The second article visits other countries who also have subway systems implemented and discuss how different they are from those in New York and how they are ultimately better. Yes, the city has an efficient system where it’s a 24 hour service and it gets you from place to place but after looking at the other subway systems and reading from first hand sources Its safe to say that New York’s subway system is disheveled, dirty, and unsuitable for some people. In other major cities subways have art gallery’s to fancy walls and ceilings to as which New York has cracked marble and weird smells. I am not the one to complain because I do not use the subway as often as other people to commute to work but after seeing other cities subway stations I think its fair to say that New York should at least put some effort into fixing the broken items, cleaning the railways, and creating a better hygiene that makes it more suitable for everyone. Most subway systems accommodate for people who need help, so ask yourself, don’t you want to live better.

Hello Joe! I completely agree with both articles. The New York subway system does not properly accommodate for people with disabilities even though they should. There are many problems with the MTA, like you said, smells, cracked walls, and dirty stations. The subway systems in other countries are much more bearable and do not have as many problems with the New York subway system. New York’s MTA should really learn from other countries and work to become more suitable for passengers, especially since there is so much money being put into the MTA.
Hey Joe. I find the topic that you chose for this response to be very interesting, since I’ve mostly seen political articles being compared. In regards to your response, I agree that the New York subway system very much needs improvement. The system is very outdated and everything has yet to be fixed, even after constantly increasing the fares. I also agree that the MTA should accommodate to everyone and work on being more accessible for people with disabilities. If you’re interested, there’s a really insightful video that the New York Times put out addressing the MTA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COLMODzYX7U .
