Who I Am

Hi, my name is Nishat Mahfuz Chowdhury and I was born and raised here in New York City. The thing that is most important to me is my family. I’m the oldest of four children. It can be annoying being the oldest sibling at times and sometimes we do get into arguments, but at the end of the day I’m grateful that I have such a wonderful, loving family. I can’t imagine not having them around me all the time. I guess this is one of the reasons why I decided to go to college in the city. Besides my parents and siblings, there is another member in my family who’s very special to me and that is our cat, Minnie. We brought Minnie home when I was in seventh grade and we consider him as the seventh member of our family. I love to hang out with my friends. My closest friends are all from high school. Although we’ve all separated our ways, we all still keep in touch.  The fifth photo on this slideshow is of an event which took place earlier this year. The photo is of some of the members of my high school Muslim Student Association, or StuyMSA for short. This group played a huge role in my life and still continues to do so. This is the group where I met some of my closest friends. StuyMSA has shaped me as who I am and has a special place in my heart. The photo after this one is of the bridge to my old high school. I decided to include this photograph because although I struggled at Stuyvesant High School, I am grateful to all the staff and students who helped me get to where I am. The seventh photo on this slideshow is a photograph I took for a photography class. I love to take photos of almost anything. I wouldn’t consider myself as an expert or anything but I just enjoy capturing moments. Finally, the last photograph is of Baruch College as you all probably recognize. I included this photograph and made it the last one on this slideshow because this is where I am today. I hope to achieve my goals and make my dreams come true with the help of this college.

http://www.photosnack.com/957A8F58B7A/ptunqhpc

Hi, my name is Jeun Woo Kang but most people call me Peter. I’m a freshman at Baruch College and my intended major is accounting or finance. I think these eight pictures I have chose best represents who I am. The first picture is my profile picture, I don’t think there’s nothing more to say about that. The second picture is map of South Korea, where I was born. The third picture is the picture of South Ferry that goes to Staten Island from the city. I was raised in Staten Island most of my life and a place I can call home. The fourth picture is a picture of my high school, “Susan E. Wagner High School”. The fifth picture is from 2-3 years ago when my friends and I decided to play in a basketball tournament, let’s just say we didn’t play too well. The sixth picture is my favorite book, a book that I can relate to in a way and the seventh picture is the picture of my favorite team from my favorite sport. Finally, the last picture is where I currently am, a student at Baruch College.

Jeff’s Playlist Blog

Hey, my name’s Jeff and I’m going to be creating my assigned blog post on the subject of music. I have created a playlist, however, it doesn’t seem to be working as of right now, so I decided to list it out below:

1.  greyhound – shm

2. save the world – shm

3. dont you worry child – shm

4. alive – krewella

5. i want it that way – bsb

6. fucking problem – asap rocky

7. clarity – zedd

8. spectrum – zedd

9. work out – j.cole

10.  get lucky – daft punk

I began my playlist with songs from the now-deceased group, Swedish House Mafia. I usually like listening to house music with a beat and more happy and positive tone to the music, and these few songs that I have selected from this group easily fits my type of personality. If I were to go into specifics and describe which part of which song I liked, I would probably have to go with greyhound’s monster climax to the song at around 2:45 of the original song. I personally find this one of the greatest and most exhilarating type of music that I can live a year listening to without a stop. I feel as if music has brought my life to levels I would have never reached, and these few songs have definitely been a major factor in my growth as a person and a student. As I walk to school, or begin a workout, Swedish House Mafia’s beat and music give puts my mind into a focused and euphoric state in which I feel as if I can do much of anything that’s reasonable and not “Crazy” or unrealistic. This honestly has boosted my character and has definitely empowered myself as a student and as an person.

The rest of these songs are also fantastic songs in my opinion. I feel as if there are songs for different parts of the day, different types of days, and songs for different moods. If I’m walking down the street, preparing to meet up with a friend, I would easily listen to any of the 7 other songs. However, the optimal song would be more specific as I would narrow down choices and choose songs accordingly. Get lucky by daft punk is easily one of those songs that I would listen to, to do anything. The beat and melody to this song is one of the most calm and hypnotizing that I’ve heard in a while. And in the best way possible. I feel as though this song is under appreciated, although it’s been played on the radio quite the number of times. Unlike Blurred lines which has been played nearly 800 times in the past 3 minutes, Get Lucky is actually a song that deserves recognition and repetitive play/

Rough times, good times, music has played a role in my recovery and celebration of my life. When times are tough, music is there to help relieve you of stress. And when times are great, they can make them far greater. This is why I feel as if music is one of the only things that can control a person.

It was difficult finding songs to best describe myself to my classmates, but I felt the best way to do this was to categorize a few songs together and then expand on their meaning, what it means to me, and what I hope it represents about me and my values. I begin with the “Enjoying Life” category, with “What a Wonderful World”, “Live Like We’re Dying” and “Celebration”. All three songs show an appreciation for this opportunity we are giving every day to interact with one another, build relationships, have a place like Earth to call our own, create memories and just be happy. The next category is quite the opposite of the previous one but not in a bad way. I do appreciate life greatly, but I always feel like we as a society can improve the world because as much as we would like to ignore it, terrible things happen all the time around the world. “If Everyone Cared” and “Imagine” are two songs that express wanting to build a better world, so that is my “Wanting Change” category. The next three songs are part of my “Never Stop Improving” category. People are always going to try and put you down; obstacles are always going to stand in your way; we are always going to make mistake; life is difficult sometimes but that doesn’t mean we stop moving forward. Like Kelly Clarkson says in her song, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” and what K’naan song reminds us, is that no matter the challenge, everything is beatable even from the terrible situation K’naan grew up in Somalia, Mogadishu during the Somali Civil War. Finally R. Kelly’s classic reminds us that when you work towards your goals, never give up, and keep improving you can become the best you. I love to think that I’m very appreciative of the life I have, and I always want to make the world better wherever I go while at the same time accepting its challenges and better improving myself BUT for the final two songs I decided to show the competitive side of myself (hey, there should be some selfishness to this). I wouldn’t want you all to take the two songs so literally when applying it to me and my character but what I want you to pull from the songs “Amazing” and “I am the Champion” is that we all need to believe in ourselves. I know when I step out on a basketball court (my favorite sport by the way), that I am going to give it my all and do the best that I can do while at the same time believing that I am the best player on the court. Yes, sounds quite selfish, but you always need to believe in yourself. Therefore this category will be called “Believe”. Thank you for reading, look forward to reading everybody else’s blog.
