Blog post 2

My group decided that we wanted to do our New York times project on business in the world today. We were all intrigued by the business world, so we did not have much of a problem doing this project. Assigning roles was simple. Each of us had two articles to read and write about. My individual responsibility was fulfilled. I wrote about two articles closely related so that it would be easy for me to present it in class.

My experience with this project wasn’t that great. I did enjoy reading the articles and learning a few new things, but I personally did not enjoy the process. It might be because I don’t like group projects. This project did not influence my understanding of news literacy much.

Hi Professor,

I want to ask if I could perhaps take a make-up midterm. I couldn’t make it the day of the midterm because I was out of school sick with a fever. It would be great if I could have a make-up exam. Please reply as soon as possible.

Thank you!

NY Times Post #2

My group’s theme for the New York Times project was health and fitness. We believe everyone should take their health more seriously. Everyone is so caught up in their lives that they don’t have time to exercise eat healthy, especially since we live in New York City, where so many things are readily available to us.

Students are a main group that should focus more on their health. Many students stay up till early morning cramming for that test or finishing that paper. Students spend many sleepless nights trying to complete their work while only running on caffeine. This is terrible for their health because they are not getting enough rest. Students have so much work that they don’t have time to take care of their health.

The article I chose was about the soda ban in New York City. Mayor Bloomberg wants to limit the size of soft drinks. Since America is the most obese country in the world, we should all take precautions to maintain our health and prevent ourselves from any health complications.

Blog Post 2: NY Times Project

Our NY Times project revolved around the theme of cultural relations in the real world and Baruch. We chose this topic because we looked at each other and at a glance, we are all a different color, a different race. We come from different backgrounds and it was very much relevant to how our communities are like internationally, locally, and educationally. We chose articles from the New York Times that pertained to cultural struggles and ethnic strife in retrospect. We chose these articles to provide emphasis on the importance of ethnic acceptance and integration. At Baruch, we see many diverse cultures and each follow different traditions. Instead of animosity, we thrive as a school and community. This is not so true outside of our school. Locally and internationally, there is still racial discrimination and cultural bias. It is important to notice the changes and adaptations of our communities. We used those New York Times articles to become more up to date on the struggles of race and how cultures are changing to incorporate every person of each tradition.

NY Times Blogpost #2: Julia Park

Our group picked the topic, Health and Fitness because it brings into account of issues that student should be aware of. Even though students focus mainly on school, they should take care of their body by eating nutritious food and stay actively fit. For the project, my individual role in the team was to select a health related article and write a summary. The article that I chose, “The Arsenic in Our Drinking Water” claims that arsenic in public drinking water has caused a range of health problems such as respiratory infections and malfunction of immune cell. This health news is really important to consider because drinking water pertains to basically everyone.

My group selected the theme of business for our New York times project. We arrived at this idea because we believed that since we are all studying business, it would only make sense to focus on the topic. The articles I selected were relevant to the theme because it focused on the latest innovations in the business arena. My individual role in the group process was to find two articles that focused on the latest instances of innovation in the business arena and to interpret those articles to the best of my understanding. I then had to post my two articles along with my interpretations unto the group page. This project has influenced my understanding of “news literacy” because it has displayed the importance of remaining updated and informed in order to stay competitive in the global market.

The theme my group selected for the New York Times project was racial and cultural diversity. We selected this theme because each of the team members comes from a different background, so our group itself was a representation of diversity.  As a result, we thought it would be interesting to explore the various articles relating to race in both, the positive and negative aspect. My individual role in the team was to select and summarize one NYTimes article and write the Bearcats section. The article I picked is called “In Looks, a Sense of Racial Unity” and I chose it because it talks about how specific fashion trends started transcending to various racial groups in the 1990s. I thought this was very interesting because it has not always been ‘normal’ to see white people wear dreadlocks or black people dye their hair blonde. Additionally, I worked on the Bearcats section and decided to talk about the Club Fair I attended and what I experienced there. This event was a great representation of student life outside the classroom because it allowed students from different classes and nationalities to connect on mutual interests.

This project has helped me realize how important ‘news literacy’ is in people’s every day life. It is essential for everyone to be aware of what is going on in the world and there’s no better and more convenient way of finding out than through reliable news. It helps people get involved and learn about the struggles and achievements of others.

Hello Professor Braimah,

I’m currently working on the New York Times project and I’m confused about what exactly we should write for the Bearcats section. Could you please remind me what this section needs to talk about? Thank you!
