Blog Post #4

The Yin-Yang symbol represents my reaction to Baruch so far. There are two sides to everything and Baruch is the same, with both ups and downs. The good side of Baruch includes the people in the block and the most lax class of the day, FRO. The other side is represented by some of the teachers, but in all honesty, I believe we were one of the more fortunate blocks. These first three months were pretty fun and easy going, but we’ve only been here for a short period of time, so there’s more to the school than we know, just like Yin and Yang both have deeper meanings as well.

Mishkin Gallery Reactions (Blog Post #3)

The Mishkin Gallery was a surprising find at Baruch. I never expected a business college to have a small exhibit like that. Personally, I did not know anything about the artist but there was a good range of paintings. Some looked more simple and tried to convey lots of details with utensils like pastels but others were painted and complex. Instead of a message that seemed very hard to comprehend, many of the paintings seemed to be clear cut in their symbolism and what was happening. Personally, the most interesting thing I heard yesterday was that the artist would sell her painting to someone every time they met. Overall, it was very informative and the facts on the author, including her over one hundred year life span was interesting. The secret to her long life is wondrous and I’m curious to how she could still paint at an age of over 100. Her style seemed to not be that consistent but I guess it was to change with the times. There seems to be a big significance on what frame is being used for what picture, which I never knew. I personally enjoyed the paintings with landscapes more, and the ones with lots of detailed people seemed less appealing. It’s probably because they somehow had a nice visual beauty and complexity while instilling a sense of large space and depth. The paintings have inspired me to try to look at more art and attempt to draw stuff. I also might be interested in taking art as one of the required courses.

NY Times Project: Food and Resturants

For the project, my group decided on the topic of food because not only is it a necessity, but it is also a big problem for many college students. With no more free school lunches, everyone has to find someone to maintain their hunger while lasting the day. For this reason, there are many restaurants all around and with so many kinds of food, this vast treasure trove is all around us.

My articles were on the perfect chicken wing and how cuisine in China is changing. The perfect chicken wing is of course relevant because it is food, but also, the chicken wing is common to the point of making it a national food and the article makes very bold assertions while heightening the grilled vs. fried debate. Around the college, there are actually many places to get good chicken wings. Chinese cuisine is in America and has affected it in several profound ways, but now, Chinese cuisine is evolving. It is taking in new outside influences and mixing together with it while allowing them to coexist separately, but Chinese food is also trying new methods that would appeal to many other senses. This new and improved style may soon find its way to America. Manhattan has many places to eat Chinese food as well. Overall, these articles have helped increases my grasp of understanding of the world of food, and hopefully it was conveyed well to the other students.

A Glimpse Into Daniel Luong

Hi everyone, these pictures hold a pretty high significance to that which is me. Food is something that we all need to live, but not everyone treats it the same way. Some people just chow down whatever in order to survive. Not me though; I love to eat delicious food. There were even two pictures, which shows the significance. Both of the dishes also show are common in many Chinese restaurants, but each shop has their own flavor, and some are better suited to certain tastes than others. Of course, it doesn’t have to be Chinese food…

The next row of pictures show diligence. Great stamina and an attitude to keep working without fussing are what I believe to be great assets. Even though some actions may be a little detrimental to your health, sometimes, there’s just work that must be taken care of.

The light bulb shows that ideas form in my head and that it actually works. The mind is very complex and there is always new things to learn! I also like electronics and love dealing with new devices.

The dragon is used to represent the Chinese culture. I used this because I learned and follow it to some extent. I hold a high degree of respect for the culture in general but also like to learn things about new cultures. The last picture shows improvement and it means that I’m willing and ready to become a better person everyday.
