NYT Reflection

When I decided to start working on my project the first thing i had to do was to find two articles that fell under the topic of politics. Since politics is a rather broad topic it wasn’t too hard to find two articles that both were about politics and about something I found interesting.  The two articles I chose were about the Supreme Court reconvening about the death penalty, and one was about the the Democrats about seeing the government turning back on as an opportunity for bipartisanship in the senate. After reading both of the articles I briefly summarized them, and posted them to the appropriate page on Blogs @ Baruch.

NY TIMES PROJECT – Group 2

politics

My groupchose to do politics because of the many topics that can be discussed. Politics is a never-ending issue and as we become mature adults,  its especially time for us to know whats going on in the world around us. Our articles reflect this topic by showing the various sections within politics. Not only this, but politics is always a controversial topic. It’s always a great conversation starter !

NY Times Project- Group 5

In our group, we decided to work on the topic of the Environment and nature and how I relates to us now. Our articles were related to this topic in different ways. For example, we did an article on fracking and how it negatively effects the environment while in another article discussed the UN’s top climate scientist have came to a limit to the level of CO2 humans can live with.

New York Times Technology

My team chose technology because we saw how it influenced a lot of people today, not just general people, but Baruch students as well. It plays major roles in our lives, but positively and negatively and we decided to explore those roles. The articles I chose related to the negative roles of technology, with a little bit of positivity. My article was about people spending too much time on technology that brings them games, so they are then pushed away from more important things in life. I also spoke about how technology is becoming so advanced that its starting to take more and more jobs away from the people who need them.

Reflection NY Times project Team 1

For my New York Times project my group decided to report on Fraternities and Sororities. We chose this topic because they are a important part of college life and have a big influence on how students behave. My articles reflected this by showing the consequences of the fraternities and Sororities massive influence and showing the possible future of their demise through college of reflection.I enjoyed the project because it allowed me to learn about a new topic while also allowing me to gain a insight on my own college experience.

Erchelle’s Reflection

Our group selected the theme nature and the environment. We saw the need for more awareness about what is happening in our environment. Although we live in it, we ar enot necessarily educated on the types of effects our actions are causing. After choosing this topic we were able to, after following the city-state-national guideline, find different topics that showed drastic changes in our environments. For this assignment, you must (1) post the New York Times “Front Page” you’ve developed in your seminar AND explain why the group selected the items that are included reflecting on how/why these selections best express the most salient issues/concerns during their first semester at Baruch.

In our group we each had the responsibility to find three articles which embodied these guidlines. My main role after finding these articles were to summarize them and explain their importance to our class. After doing this research, I have become more conscious of my actions and how they will impact the environment. Even before this research, I have been conscious of littering and if someone close by is littering, I would ask them to pick it up. My willingness to research more about the environment and keep tabs on what is going on in the world as increased more.

I was following an article that explained, trash in the train tracks can lead to a fire and I definitely would like to live as I travel to and from places using the trains. The main point to take away though is that even the little counts. If someone sees you littering they may too because they may have the concept in their minds that someone will clean up after them or a little dirt will not hurt. The truth of the matter is the little adds up and eventually we can be living in our own waste. Now who really wants to do that?

The link to our project is below. Remember every little counts so take the first step and read a little, today!

Reflection on NY Times project

In my opinion, I think that the New York Time’s Project was a fun experience. Our learning community block is very close so I think that any type of group would have worked out well, and nobody would have had any trouble working with anyone.

My group’s topic was on the environment, and was very easy to find articles on the environment and link them to Baruch (the bear cat article). Our message was easy to get across and it was something that everyone should be aware of.

The work was divided among all of the group and there were no complaints about anyone doing or not doing the work properly. Overall it was a good experience and I wouldn’t mind doing it again

Blog Post 2: NYT Project Reflection

My group decided to do our topic on Greek Life in College. Hollywood have made countless jabs at the negativity of college Greek Life, and I found this really interested and wanted to see if Greek Life is really as bad as it is seen on the big screen. Through this project I was able to learn the positive and negative side of Greek Life.  In one of my articles of an elder man who joined a fraternity, showed the members of the social organization have a special bond that last a lifetime. They do great things like charity, community service, bake sales, and more. The negative side of this life style is the continuous act of hazing which resulted in some deaths.  My bearcat article described the options we have at Baruch. As freshmen in our first semester, we are just adjusting to college life. Being active in the school community by joining a club or a Greek letter organization is a good way to make new friends and adjust. Not only did I have fun completing this project, I also become aware of the many options Baruch has to offer to keep its students interested.

Farzana- Team 3

1.  Our theme was restaurants.  Food is a common interest and we could tie it into many things.  Plus, the New York Times was bound to have many interesting articles on food.  I chose an article about an interesting restaurant in Shanghai, China that made your experience eating there one that you would never forget.  I also wrote the Bearcat article.  I talked about how someone would never have the full Baruch experience without having Chipotle.

2. I did my parts of the project on time and made sure the administrator for our group didn’t have to do extra work because of me.

3. The project helped me learn that there are interesting things in every section of the newspaper, not just the headlines.  i would have never learned about the strange restaurant in China otherwise.  I usually don’t read the food and wine section of the New York Times.

Shawntell James – Blog post #2

               politics
The theme my group selected for ourNew York Times “Front Page” was politics. We decided that this was a topic that always had something new to talk about and would be broad enough to not only interest ourselves but more importantly our peers. Once we chose politics we ventured off,  allowing each member to pick topics that interested them and related to the topic. Again the broad topic gave each member the freedom to take their reports in any direction.
In my group, I was responsible for finding and summarizing one article that interested me, and writing the Bearcat article. The Bearcat article had to be one that related to our school, so I chose an article written inour school newspaper, The Ticker, about in-house elections in our Undergraduate Student Government. My experience in this project has increased my news literacy. I follow the news more closely than before and am able to have fluent conversations about current events going on in the world.
I enjoyed sharing my ideas with my peers so it was an enjoyable experience presenting the articles I had chosen and summarized with my peers. It was also nice to know that the other members of my team worked hard on their parts as well.
