While I may find it odd that music can represent somebody, I can’t deny that many people use music as a tool of their own expression. For me, the playlist I created may help some understand who I am while others will most likely be baffled with my musical choices/ interests. Right from the start, many assume that I am a huge fan of hip hop, given the songs “Dance with the Devil” by Immortal Technique, “Survival” by Eminem and “I’m on a Boat” by the Lonely Island, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. While I do enjoy hip hop, which is my favorite genre of music, I enjoy other genres of music that isn’t restrited to just hip hop. Examples include classical music, as shown with “Symphony No. 40” by Mozart, metal, as shown by “BYOB” by System of a Down”, and even movie soundtracks, as shown by “Imperial March” by John Williams and “The Dark Knight theme” by Hans Zimmer. What these diverse selections show is that even though I may have favoritism towards hip hop, I enjoy pretty much any form of music available, except music made for teenage girls.
However, there is more to these songs outside of musical genres. “BYOB” by System of a Down and “Dance with the Devil “ by immortal Technique are songs that both have an important message to offer. To me, I enjoy songs with an important, coherent and focused message, especially political and economic issues. I don’t normally associate myself with the generic party and vague love songs that pollute the air waves and I wished that there would be more songs that had important messages like these 2 that could get popular. Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and the title theme from “A Clockwork Orange” by Wendy Carlos show that I enjoy songs about treachery, evil and eeriness. While the first one is a reference about the devil, hence the title, the other reflects on the movies premise, a psychotic criminal who has a fond and yet creepy fascination for rape, crime and Beethoven. If anything, I think this list shows what movies I like more than what songs I like. Strangely Eminem and Mozart help represent my personality. “Symphony No. 40” by Mozart helps show my quiet side (as I rarely talk), with a near mute and carefully performed piece while “Survival” by Eminem shows me as a loudmouth and brash person, which I’m afraid I actually portray in real life whenever I do speak. Finally, we have “I’m on a Boat” by the Lonely Island and “Amish Paradise” by “Weird Al” Yankovic. Both of these songs help represent my sense of humor with one making a bombastic tale about a boating experience while the other mixes the Amish lifestyle in a comedic way with a Coolio song, specifically “Gangstas Paradise”. These show my sense of humor and, in a way, show where a lot of my jokes come from.
