How to Become a Richer Student

As a college student, there are two major factors that most of the the students concern about the most: academics and money. That’s why we chose the topic about money for the New York Times project- How To Become a Richer Student. Going to college is costly, you not only have to pay for your tuition, but also other expenses such as dorm, meal and commute fee. If students could not manage their money properly, they will get into financial crisis easily. Therefore, we decided to choose the articles about personal finance and saving money as our project’s topic on the purpose to help students make better decisions of spending money and saving money.

Transportation is the topic our group’s New York Times project. We chose the topic of transportation because we realized that the transportation system plays an important role in our every day life, especially for the people who live in New York City. People in New York City travel or commute by train, subway, bus, and taxi a lot comparing to other cities and regions. In the way, we could see that transportation is very significant for us an has big impact on people’s life style. For example, the students from Baruch College are from different boroughs or even outside of New York City to commute to school, the transportation system would be so important to them. If there is something wrong within the transportation, students might be late for their classes or miss the exams.

For the New York Times front page project, our group choose the topic about how to save money for students. Because we are students, it’s not easy to find a good job for us. Although we can find some part time work, it still gets a lot of money because we neither do not have experience nor time. Instead of gaining money, our group find some ways to save money for college students. We choose the articles, which talks about insurance plan and some free activities that we can join after school. In my knowledge, I think saving money is equal to gain money. Even though we know the way to save our money, it is still very hard to do so because this is our first year at Baruch college. We need to spend money in everywhere such as our tuition, books and lunch. Our purpose of the project is to show students that there is many ways to save money and we have to do it for our future.

Our New York Times front page focused on recycling since it is both related to Baruch and the world. Global warming is one of the problematic issues in today’s society. In order to reduce waste and possibility for further pollution on earth, we decided to introduce articles about recycling. We hoped the readers will learn from our front page and start making effort to recycle. After writing about recycling in Baruch, I became more aware of reducing in school.

For our New York Times front page project, we came up with some topics that relate to our daily life at the beginning, like food, sleeping and healthy eating. But once we started looking up articles for the topics, we realize that those were not the right one. Then we started brainstorming all over again. For this time, we started thinking about the topics that are relate to Baruch or college students, because we knew that we need to write an article that’s related to Baruch. One of our group members suggest that we can write some financial tips for everyone, because Baruch is a business school and it’s never too early to learn some financial tips. After the topic was decided, we did research individually and share with each other afterward, and then we chose the articles together and started writing the summaries and the article. I think all the articles we read and the article that Sona wrote was very informative because I did actually learned a lot of financial tips from these articles.

Our group chose transportation for New York Times Project. New York City’s different modes of transportation system are essential to New Yorkers. People travel by automobile, bus, and subway a lot. Since Baruch College is located in Manhattan, many students who live in other borough need to take either by car or subway. The article I chose was about having Wi-Fi and cell phone services on the underground train. I think this article is related to Baruch College student that by having Wi-Fi access, students can have so many things to do instead of staring at others. For instance, students can check their emails, and do some readings. Also, since it’s my first semester at Baruch College, I realized that the subway is so important to me, because I need to take the subway every day to Manhattan. If there’s no transportation systems, then how can people travel and how can  we go to Baruch College?

My group chose education because we are students here at Baruch and education is a big things in our college lives. Since we are students, education is everything for us and we wanted to see the education here at Baruch and other places. As students, we wanted to learn the education that we are receiving or going to receive. The articles I found was about cheating in Harvard and GED. These things can affect us and other people that come to our school. GED is one thing colleges look at when accepting people who did not pass high school. Also cheating is one thing that we learned in class so that’s why I chose these articles. Education is very important for students so that’s why our group chose education.

The reason we chose recycling as our topic for NYT project was that recycling is such a big thing in our society. You can see recycling is important by looking at how many people are trying to recycle their trashes every day, even Baruch is promoting recycling on campus. For example, you see the phrase “clean space” almost every where you go in Baruch, and you certainly see the numerous recycling bins on every floor. Not only in Baruch, recycling is essential around the globe because every country is trying to find a way to reduce their wastes. This topic best expresses my concern in Baruch because Baruch such a “clean” school, and I really like how they are trying to categories different types of trash so we can easily recycle them, so I want to support this movement by writing about it.

For my New York Times Project, our group chose education as the topic because the project had to be related to CUNY Baruch College. Our group was trying to do a different topic on New York Times Project, however the project was supposed to be about Baruch. Here in Baruch College, education is really getting more important each year. Each year, there are more students applying to Baruch College because the amount of money that has to be paid is cheap. Another reason students apply to Baruch College more often is that education here is getting stronger and students who could have gotten to better college is choosing Baruch. As a result, statistically and academic wise, Baruch College is getting more competitive than ever and is proven at www.collegeboard.org. This is why my group decided to choose education as the topic since there were many information and facts we could put in the New York Times Project about Baruch College.

Saving money is important in our daily lives and not just to college students, but to everyone in the world. However, saving money in college is extremely important because we are now adults, and college students, and we are investing immense amount of money into our education and everything that comes with it (i.e. tuition, dorm, food…). Since this is our first semester, managing money might be a little difficult. Since we are located in the city, we are tempted to spend more money and so going out to dinner and lunch with friends will lead to us spending more money. Which is totally great but sometimes we are having just so much fun we are not really aware of spending habits. At least we should keep track of it and be aware of where are money is going. Since we are new college explorers, spending money can be more tempting since we have more freedom and time to do whatever we want. We wanted to show that you can go to college and have fun without having to spend a lot of money!
