Blog Post #2

The topic of NYT project that our group chose is Education. Although all of our group members forced on different sub-topic, but the reason we chose Education as our big topic is because that it is the most important thing to us right now since we are currently college students.

I found two articles on the New York Times. The first one is about the higher education tuition. Who should really pay for the public colleges? It used to be the fifty-fifty police: the states pay the half and the students pay another half. However, public college started crossing this line in the past five years because the local government could not afford it. They have to concern about other things like medicare and K-12 educations, so the public college fee is getting higher. The second arctile i found it about the college athletics.  The NCAA get all the money from “selling” the athletic students but the students don’t get much money. However, NCAA argues that players should get nothing more than a scholarship, which has a possibility that the colleges may cancel it, and that is unfair to the athletic students.

i think both article are related to our topic, Education. Getting know about these news can know how them could affect us. We come to the college to get professional information and we hope that things would work well for us. Our group wish people to concern about the education so we chose this topic.

For NY Times project, my group chose the topic education, the reason that why we chose education as our project topic is that education is most important to us now. We want to be educated and get knowledge,  that’s why all of us go to college, because we want better education leads us to a better future. Besides that, we want to introduce education to everybody, because it is important to everybody. Also, there are many education issues going on in this world, since education is closest topic to un, we want to know more about these issues. For example, we talk about high achieved students from low-income class family in four years colleges has lower graduation rate than high achieved students from low-income class family in top universities. From this issues that we address, this may be helpful to other students who are still choosing college. Therefore, our group chose education to be our topic for NY Times project, because it is closest to our life today.

Our group chose  the topic of recycling globally and in Baruch. We decided to choose the topic because we are aware that Baruch has recently adopted the recycling system and global warming is a big issue. We are trying to have a control of the global warming and we thought it would be a good idea to bring up the topic since it is something we are trying to fight against the global warming together. It is also shocking that even though there are shout outs about it here and there, people are not putting much effort into the recycling. However, Baruch took an initiative to start the recycling program. We felt that it is a huge step and we felt that it is an important one and as a result of it, we are inspired to choose the topic. Also, in our first semester, Baruch’s recycling program caught our attention. As a result, we decided to choose the topic.

The New York Times project topic that my group and I chose was transportation. The reason why we chose this topic is because it has a lot of variations and articles to cover on the newspaper itself, (e.g.- airplane accidents, train accidents, ships, etc.) Another reason why we chose this topic was because it is relevant to almost everyone in the class; they all have to commute to school and most of the class have a rather long commute ranging from 30 plus minutes every school day. The last reason why we chose transportation was because it would be easier to make the article that was related to Baruch on it; there was a signal problem with the subway at DeKalb Ave which caused a lot of students in the class to be late that morning. These are the reasons why we chose transportation as our topic.

For, the New York Times project, our theme was transportation.  Our group chose this theme because transportation affects our everyday lives whether we are taking the train, taking the bus or driving a car to places we need to go.  Also, most students in Baruch commute so transportation do affect us. We want to bring attention to the issues we are having with transportation systems and how we can better them.  For example, most people want Wi-Fi underground so that its convenient and it is useful in case of emergency.  Another example is creating bike lanes for the cyclist in the busy streets of Manhattan.  Another can be improving the subway system so that it runs efficiently and be on time. This  allows students to get to class on time and allow people to get to work on time. We also want to focus on some of the good things, such as China’s safe and efficient train systems.  We always want to find improvements to benefit the people in society and have things ran efficiently.
