Blog Post #1- Hey There

Hey there y’all, my name is Alexis Yam and welcome to my blog. I was born and raised in the great city of New York and I went to Townsend Harris High School where I met some of my closest friends. Like I said on the first day of school, many people call me “Shortie” or “The Short One” because I am only 4’9 haha. Sometimes being so short makes me feel as if I’m missing out on the bigger picture but then I’ve come to the conclusion that being short gives me an advantage when meeting people because it’s such an easy conversation starter.

From my slideshow, it shows eight pictures of what I think defines me most. The first is obviously my family because I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them. I love my family and they mean the world to me. The second slide shows my friends and these are the people that I trust the most with my life and also to cheer me up when I’m feeling down. I love socializing with others because I get to meet different people and listen to their countless stories. I believe that it is the people that I know that makes my life so much more interesting.

The third slide shows my team. During high school, I was an 11 out of 12 season athlete which means that I’ve been on a sports team for almost the whole time I was in high school. I’ve joined cross country, outdoor track, indoor track, and handball. Disclaimer: just because I’m on the team, doesn’t mean I’m good. If anything, I suck. The fourth slide shows my passion for dance. When I’m dancing, I have way more confidence than I do in real life. I participated in FON (Festival of Nations) and basically we modernize the dances of different cultures. Performing on stage is scary, not going to lie. But it’s the accomplished feeling you get after that makes it all worth it.

The fifth slide shows my love for children. I’ve been a kindergarten teacher assistant for the past four years and this summer, I went to Taiwan by myself for a month to teach English for two weeks. Hands down, one of the best experiences of my life. The sixth slide shows food because food makes everyone happy so it definitely defines a part of me. The seventh slide is a picture of my family and I travelling and even though all we see are trees and waterfalls, it feels different every time. The last slide simply represents being free to do what I choose to do with my own life. #YOLO you only live once, so live it big.
