Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Career – Starr Workshop

Last Tuesday, November 6, I attended a workshop at the Starr Career and Development Center. The workshop I attended was called “Mastering the Job Interview – Basic”.

Honestly, I was a little nervous to go because I was going by myself and I did not really know what to expect. I was also really intimidated because I have never really had a job interview before. I always just kind of got a job informally. I did have interviews for college though and that is basically the same thing. But, I did it and I survived. I learned a lot, too.

I was surprised by how many people went to the workshop. The room was almost full and there was a nice mix of people. There were a lot of freshmen, all of which were there for FRO, sophomores and juniors preparing for internship interviews, and graduating seniors getting ready to go out into the world.

We were all provided with a packet providing us with information on exactly what to expect during a job interview. The packet also included information on how to prepare for the interview along with ways to dress for the interview specific to the field you are pursuing.

We did a couple activities with the other people there. We practiced lots of basic things that make a huge impact during the interview process. This includes a firm handshake and introducing yourself. We also did an activity were we practiced our personal pitch. A personal pitch is the part of the interview where the interviewer asks you about yourself and you have to answer in the most jam packed concise way possible. It’s very difficult.

The workshop was very engaging and I learned lot. I thought it would last forever and be very boring, but it went by very fast and the instructor even let us out early. I would definitely go to another workshop. I learned so much and it was definitely worth it.

Academic – American Museum of Natural History

For this blog post, I’ve decided to write about my recent venture to the American Museum of Natural History. I went with my roommate and our friend Kaylee that also lives in the dorms.

I was really excited to go because I had heard about the new exhibit of the mummies and I really wanted to see them. This was also my first time going to this museum so it was even more thrilling. Actually, it wasn’t my first time going. I went one time years and years ago with my mom and sister, but I don’t even remember that so it doesn’t count. So yeah, this was my first time going and I was very exciting.

I was looking forward to going even more because it’s where one of my favorite movies, Night at the Museum, takes place. I couldn’t wait to walk all around the museum and see all the different iconic spots from the movie. I went to learn some things about history too of course.

We spent the whole day at the museum making sure we hit all the cool spots and took lots of pictures. We were coming to the end of the day when we decided to go see the mummies. Disaster struck. The mummy exhibit was closed! And you had to pay to get in! So crazy. So upsetting. So sad. We all agreed that we would go back one day soon so that we can see the mummies.

We stayed until closing. I was surprised by how early the museum closed. It closed at 6 p.m. which I thought was very early. The sun wasn’t even setting yet. I thought that maybe they needed to get all the people out to give the janitorial staff time to clean everything before the museum comes to life. Just kidding. Still, I was very surprised. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.

I had an awesome time at the museum. It was all so interesting and I was honestly surprised at how big the museum was. The building doesn’t look that big from the outside. All the exhibits were so amazing and it was a greatday spent with great people.

Student Life- Latinx Heritage Month

For my first blog, I attended the Family Feud night hosted by USG for Latinx Heritage Month. I had a lot of fun with my friends Monica, Elda, Shazath, and Anthony.

We were not a part of the teams actually playing in the Latinx themed family feud games, but we participated with the audience by shouting out answers. The questions were both Hispanic and Baruch related questions like “Name famous Hispanic athletes” and “What are the types of clubs and organizations at Baruch”.

It was a very welcoming environment that made everyone feel comfortable to be there even if they were not Hispanic. The “families” were made up of various student organizations at Baruch including Lexicon and LASO. Everyone made everyone feel included and as though they were all good friends just hanging out.

I really enjoyed this experience because it allowed me to talk to different types of people and people that I don’t always see in my classes. I made a new friend at this event, too. His name is Zayn and he is a senior here at Baruch. He is studying business and plans to graduate at the end of the upcoming spring semester. If it weren’t for this event, I probably would never have met Zayn. He is in the picture that is embedded with the blog post. He’s standing next to Shazath with the peace sign.

I can definitely see myself coming back to one of these events because it was great. For example, I would definitely like to attend the Let’s Eat event on Thursday, September 28. Not only would I learn how to prepare healthy Latinx cuisine, but I will also learn how to make it on a budget. This makes it even better because life is expensive.

I really had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to attend more student life events.
