Starr Career Development Center Workshop

For this post, I decided to attend a workshop offered by the Starr Career Development Center. This workshop focused on LinkedIn and how it is a useful resource to obtain job opportunities related to your future career.

In this workshop, they explained how LinkedIn works and how it is very similar to Facebook. LinkedIn has a very similar format as Facebook, such as that you make your own profile, make connections (like making friends on Facebook), and send messages between your connections. It is like a Facebook for the professional world. Seeing how easy it was to use and how similar it was to a website I already use encouraged me more to start using this resource.

They talked about how important it was to have and use this resource to help you build up experience in your career. They talked about how LinkedIn is a place where professionals connect and offer many job opportunities. Your profile on LinkedIn acts as your resume. They explained how LinkedIn lists job opportunities for you based on your interests and location. Professionals can look at your resume and contact you through messages on LinkedIn and visa versa. It is a great resource to look for a job in the field that you are interested in. I think that this is a much safer place to look for a job as opposed to other job searching sites such as Craigslist where some job ads aren’t real.

I found this workshop very informative and I’m glad that I attended it. If it weren’t for this, I don’t think I would have known how important this resource is and how it can benefit me in my path towards my career. I definitely will be creating my LinkedIn profile and start using it to benefit me in my future career.

Academic- American Museum of Natural History

I decided to go to the American Museum of Natural History with my sister for this blog post. My sister had been there before on a class trip and really enjoyed it. She really wanted to go again and take one of us along, and so I went.

I honestly wasn’t so excited about going to the American Museum of Natural History, I’m not exactly a fan of museums.. or walking, but it actually turned out to be a great experience. I think it’s because the other times I have gone, I was on class trips where we had to take notes at every display. This time, I was with my little sister and she made it fun.

My sister and I saw many exhibits, but the one we spent more time on was the dinosaur exhibit. It’s amazing to see how huge these creatures were! There were so many different types of dinosaur displays. I can only imagine how much work it takes to put together a dinosaur display in the museum ever so carefully that not a single bone should break. It’s interesting to me how much the archeologists know about the lifestyle each dinosaur carried by their remains.

Next to the dinosaur exhibit was a little hall where they sat you down to watch a video on evolution. In the video, you see how pre-historic creatures evolved to become the animals we are familiar with today, including us humans. Something that caught my attention was the different types of homo species that existed, meaning the different types of species of humans. It’s interesting to see the different versions of the homo species.

My experience at the American Museum of Natural History was great. I would recommend checking this place out, you’re bound to find something you’re interested in. I hope to visit more museums in the future.

Student Life- Latino Heritage Month

On Thursday, I attended a Latino Heritage event. I wasn’t sure what to expect, this was my first student life event, but it turned out to be a great experience. A lot of people turned out for the event. It was a good ambiance and everyone seemed to having a great time.

The game for the event was Family Feud, Latino style. Many groups participated, like USG. The topics were things like name popular Latino artists, to which I knew the answers to. Everyone was so engaged in the activity. The room was very loud. People were yelling out answers to the participating groups, who were very competitive. I don’t think I have ever been in an event like this, so participating in the game was fun. Very different from those math or physics related Jeopardy games in the past. Overall, the participating groups knew their Latino culture.

It was nice seeing people from different ethnicities so enthusiastic about Latino culture. In my group of friends alone, there were five different ethnicities. Being a Latina myself, it was a good feeling to be part of this unity in celebrating Latino heritage month. It made me think that there should be more events like this, more opportunities for people to come together as one. It really was a good ambiance. I even met new people.

After an hour or so, we had a break and we ate pizza. Then the game continued to the final rounds. This event got me interested in participating in more heritage month events. I like learning about different cultures and taking part in these kinds of activities. This event was enjoyable; it was a good break from classes, assignments, and work. My overall experience was great, and I would definitely go to another event like this.
