For this post, I decided to attend a workshop offered by the Starr Career Development Center. This workshop focused on LinkedIn and how it is a useful resource to obtain job opportunities related to your future career.
In this workshop, they explained how LinkedIn works and how it is very similar to Facebook. LinkedIn has a very similar format as Facebook, such as that you make your own profile, make connections (like making friends on Facebook), and send messages between your connections. It is like a Facebook for the professional world. Seeing how easy it was to use and how similar it was to a website I already use encouraged me more to start using this resource.
They talked about how important it was to have and use this resource to help you build up experience in your career. They talked about how LinkedIn is a place where professionals connect and offer many job opportunities. Your profile on LinkedIn acts as your resume. They explained how LinkedIn lists job opportunities for you based on your interests and location. Professionals can look at your resume and contact you through messages on LinkedIn and visa versa. It is a great resource to look for a job in the field that you are interested in. I think that this is a much safer place to look for a job as opposed to other job searching sites such as Craigslist where some job ads aren’t real.
I found this workshop very informative and I’m glad that I attended it. If it weren’t for this, I don’t think I would have known how important this resource is and how it can benefit me in my path towards my career. I definitely will be creating my LinkedIn profile and start using it to benefit me in my future career.
