On Campus Recruiting Workshop

With friends, I went to a Starr Career Development Center workshop. This event was about the on campus recruiting that happens at Baruch College. It was targeted mostly towards juniors and seniors, but we decided to go anyways to see what it was about. We decided to go to the on campus recruiting workshop because we didn’t want to be stressed about going to one the week of enrolling into classes. We were nervous that because the event was mostly hosted for junior and seniors, we would be the only first years there so we tried to stay inconspicuous and not look so out of place.

The whole workshop covered three different topics; the resume, the on campus recruitment, and the interview. I found the parts about the resume and interview part the most helpful to me now because I would most likely be using those skills soon rather than the on campus recruiting that would happen in a couple years. For the on campus recruiting section of the info session, the presenter explained how to use and navigate the website the Starr Career Development Center uses to keep track of the students going through on campus recruiting. She explained how to set up our profiles and what should and shouldn’t be on it. She went through the do’s and don’ts for interviews and what you should do after and during an interview. At the beginning of the event, a manual book was passed out to everyone attending, explaining everything in greater detail that the presenter talked about. Overall, I thought that this event was helpful in that it prepared me a little bit of what to expect in the future. Going to this specific event makes us eligible for on campus recruiting for when we do actually decide to do it, so we won’t have to worry about going to the event again in the future since it is only available twice a year.

The Rubin Museum of Art

The Rubin Museum of Art is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. The museum specializes in artwork from the Himalayas and its surrounding neighbors, like India. Their mission is to promote understanding, stimulate learning, and to spark personal connections to the culture and ideas of Himalayan Asia.

I had to go to the Rubin Museum of Art for a homework assignment I had to do for my art history class. I am not the type of person who chooses to go to museums and usually would never go unless it is required of me to. I was not expecting to enjoy myself at all as I am not a big fan of museums, much less for ones specializing in art.

When I got to museum, I was surprised that it was so small. When I think about museums, I think of huge building with massive amounts of rooms and high ceilings. The Rubin Museum of Art, however, threw me off. If anything, it looks like a regular building you can find anywhere in that neighborhood. The museum has a total of five floors, each with its own different exhibit on each floor. People can have the option of being lazy and taking the elevators, or they can walk up the big, winding spiral staircase located conveniently at the center of the building. I chose to use the stairs.

Museums always have special exhibits going on, and The Rubin was the same. Right now, there is a special exhibit going on focusing on sounds. It is called “The World is Sound” and it was a pretty cool experience. There were parts where I had to touch the wall in order to hear what was playing over the speaker. I found it interesting how none of the different displays were overlapping and disrupting each other. It was as if each display was in their own little room. The sounds played ranged from religious mantras to sounds found in the nature to traditional instruments used in the Buddhist and Hindu culture. Out of my entire experience there, I’d say the sound exhibit was my favorite. You should definitely check the exhibit out before it closes in January.

UCLA

The United Chinese Language Association is one of the many clubs offered here at Baruch College. I was first intrigued by this club when I heard the abbreviation of the club being shouted out during the Club Carnival on Convocation Day; UCLA. I was confused on why UCLA was at Baruch College when representatives of the club approached me and explained what the club actually stood for. The representatives were very nice and welcoming so I thought why not and decided to go to their general club interest meeting (also because their flyers were really pretty).

UCLA’s first general interest meeting was on August 31st during the official club hours. When I finally found the room the meeting was to be taking place in, I was shocked at the sheer amount of people that showed up. Latecomers even had to stand outside in the hallways as the room couldn’t fit everyone inside. Some of the representatives confided in me that even they didn’t think this many people would show up.

Once everyone was settled down, the club representatives all introduced themselves and a PowerPoint presentation was shown for all the potential new club members to get a feel of what UCLA was all about. UCLA is about promoting Chinese American awareness and to increase knowledge about its culture and heritage at Baruch College. They host important Chinese events like the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Lunar Festival. UCLA also provides mentorships from Baruch alumni and is into philanthropy.

After the presentation, we played icebreaker games to get to know each other a little bit better. One game we played was called scenarios where there were two teams of three who had to act out a scene. Each team had one role and whichever team couldn’t come up with a comeback fast enough would ultimately lose.

When the general interest meeting came to an end, I was sad to go. I had a lot of fun during the meeting watching people volunteer to go up and participate in the games. I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the whole event and I left with a big smile on my face. I’m currently thinking about joining UCLA but who knows.
