For my career workshop section, I didn’t have time to go to an event because I had classes or work during those events, so I choose to peer edit my resume.   I have not received a constructive review or edit of my resume, therefore, I decided to get help with my resume.  I got help from John and he helped review my resume;  he pointed out several items that should be clarified and added.  I added several new information, for example, adding Baruch to my “education” section.   I also got in touch with other people and they checked my resume.  Also, I got their resume, and I looked into other information that could be useful or would be constructive.   In the near future, when I have the chance to attend a STARR event or any career event, I will try to re-evaluate my resume and its context, and have another career event member edit it.

 

Ascend is a professional organization with over 200 members. They help people refine their resumes, interviewing skills, networking skills, and much more. This was my very first meeting at this club so I had no idea what to expect. At this meeting, I got an idea of what they do. At this meeting, we were trying to think of ideas that will help us raise money. There were many great ideas like a Movie Night, a Winter Ball, and a game where people play to win prizes. I feel like doing these types of things are very good for people who want to major in marketing because you need to find ways to sell your idea. I never thought about majoring in marketing but now it looks like a possibility because it is really fun. You get to be creative and get the feeling of having done something useful in your project.

On September 15, there was a job fair for undergraduate students. I went there with my friends to network and find a suitable job. Companies and banks such as Uniqlo, E-trade, Citibank, and the likes were at the career fair. However, most representatives of the different companies that participated were not looking to hire freshmen. There wasn’t even a choice to find internships, most companies only hired sophomores or higher. Even so, I learned a lot on what I can do for the next job fair by talking to the many representatives that were present. I know that I always have to research about a company before going up to their representatives to have a chat, that way I will know what to ask them and be prepared for the questions that they ask. In addition, now I know which companies to go for to find jobs or internships opportunities for the next career fair.

Going to the majors and minors fair really gave me insight on how I want to handle my next four years at Baruch. Coming into the school, I thought I had my whole future planned out; I thought I knew everything there was to know. When I arrived at the fair, I spoke with a volunteer representative from the Accounting Department, Lorraine Sachs. After asking her a myriad of questions, I felt relieved as she explained what I steps I need to take in order to get a CPA license. I am still not 100% sure that I want to be an accountant, but having some information about the field is still a step forward. I have also been contemplating which minor to take, which she helped me decide as well. Her insights were genuine and extremely helpful. After speaking with Ms. Sachs, I spoke with an academic advisor at the fair as well who assisted me in picking out which classes I should take next semester.

Because of my multilingual background, I have always looked to major in something that will allow me to find a career in which I get to be a globetrotter-as well as earning me a very hefty salary. This is why I always looked toward majoring in international business. Luckily, unlike most colleges, Baruch offers such a major. Therefore, at the Majors and Minors fair, the first place I went to was in fact, International Business.

Trying to be opened to other majors, I definitely also have a soft-spot for real estate as I find the industry always booming, contemporary, fun, and well-paying (if done well :p.) I also visited that booth as well.

There was not much that I learned about these two majors but it was very helpful to speak to a representative and understand more exactly what would be waiting for me when I do declare my major.

Today, I went to the Majors and Minors fair to see what kind of opportunities Baruch has to offer. I am tied between  Accounting and Finance. I favor towards becoming a Finance major, but I think there will be more opportunities as an Accountant. By working hard, I can become known in the Accounting field. However in Finance, one must already have connections.

This event has caused me to think about my minor in addition to my major. I really want to major in French, but I am having second doubts because I don’t know if I will actually become fluent in French. Perhaps I could double minor, but I don’t know if it’s actually possible for me to do so. Overall, I am glad I attended this event because I am getting more and more familiar with the system. 

Today, November 9^th, was the Majors and Minors Fair.  I️ know that I️ plan to major in Journalism and minor in Communication, but I️ went to the fair to have more knowledge on what classes I️ would have to take in the future.  Journalism has two categories: Business Journalism and Creative Writing Journalism, which is the one I️ would like to pursue in the future.  I would like to have a job on the radio, which is an elective and therefore doesn’t matter which category I️ wish to major in.  When I️ went to the Journalism table, I️ was greeted by a woman and a man.  The woman asked me what my name was and once I️ told her, her eyes lit up because her name is also Giselle, minus one “l”.  I️ then went and said that I️ had just enrolled in her journalism class for the spring and how excited I️ was.  Professor Gisele Regato then asked me what I️ plan to do in the future and I️ told her that I️ wanted to be on the radio.  This is where I️ really shocked her because Professor Regato has been working on the radio and doing podcasts for almost 15 years.  She told me that this was fate and that i️t is so exciting to be meeting someone that not only shared the same name as her, but wants to pursue the same career.  We obviously took a picture together and said that we cannot wait for next semester.  After an eventful 10-15 minutes at the Journalism table, I️ went to the Communication table.  I️ was greeted by two friendly women who gave all the information I️ need to have Communication as my minor.  I️ also had to give my information so that one of the advisors could email me information of which communication classes to take that corresponds to a Journalism major.  All in all, the Majors and Minors Fair was a great experience that helped me to fully understand on how to plan for the rest of my time here at Baruch.

The undergraduate job fair was pretty interesting. The lines were especially long for the different banks that were there. It made sense though, many people that were there were mainly looking for undergraduate college juniors or seniors. Freshman was rarely a choice there for job searching. It was pretty interesting how each company was making their pitch to lure in curious onlookers. I went to quite a few and most of them actually had a lot of good freebies as well. I got a small boat stress toy from one of them. Out of many companies visited, there were some that were willing to hire freshman. I got hired through one of them through this career fair. It’s great how the school offers do many opportunities throughout the year. It gives a better insight to preparing ourselves for the upcoming years when we actually need to get internships. I am very glad I came to this school because it helps the students strive to become what they would want to do for their careers, in the future.
