Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DFD

Focus 2 Assessment STARR CDC

I visited the STARR career development center on the second floor of the Newman Vertical Campus at Baruch college for my third blog post in freshman seminar. Even though I just went there to find out how to do the focus 2 assessment and complete the assignment, I got a lot of useful information. They said to look at their website too for more information. When I got home, I checked the website and found useful information to help me in the future. I saw a couple of videos that taught a variety of things such as how to tie a tie and how to give a good handshake. It was very helpful and I’m sure it would make me more successful in life as it will help me get internships and eventually help me get jobs with the experience from and skills I would get from the internship along with the information given to me by the career development center. The focus 2 assessment asked questions about work interest, skills, personality, values, and leisure interests. I completed the focus 2 assessment and the results surprised me. I assumed it would tell me to have a career only in math or science but it told me I should also consider doing a management/administrative career. This was very helpful and I will reconsider my career path.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

On Thursday, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I needed to go to a museum for two classes: Art History and Global History and it was an option for one of the blog posts for Freshman Seminar. I went to the second floor to look at Renaissance art for Art History and walked around for a while. I liked one painting so I decided to use that one for the assignment. I sat there for about half an hour writing as many details as I could. I walked around for a while to actually look at the museum. I went to the Ancient Mesopotamia exhibit and looked around. I went to the Ancient Egypt exhibit for Global History. I saw the Temple of Dendur  and a group of people rehearsing a dance or something. I saw a lot of statues and hieroglyphs. I spent a few hours there trying to find something for the assignment. I found a few potential objects to write the assignment about. The museum is very large and I didn’t see all of its exhibits. It was interesting and I learned a lot. I’ll probably visit the museum again so I can see the rest of the exhibits.

Absolute Adrenaline

On Thursday during club hours, I went to the general interest meeting for Absolute Adrenaline after seeing a post about it in a Facebook group. After we all took our seats, we started by doing an icebreaker in which students said an adjective and their first name while doing a gesture. After the icebreaker, the treasurer, secretary and president (pictured) of Absolute Adrenaline introduced themselves. We then played chief, a game where everyone stands in a circle and copy the actions of one person, there is one person who doesn’t know who the leader is and they try to figure out who is the leader. After the icebreaker and game, we took our seats again for the presentation. The presentation showed pictures of the original Absolute Adrenaline, trips the the group went on, and events that they held. The trips included, paintball, hiking, kayaking, and skiing/snowboarding. The events including dodgeball, archery, indoor rock climbing, laser tag, and dodgeball have big turnouts. The group also plays games during club hours. We also learned about how the group is very community oriented and centered around friendship, it is a group for people who like physical activity, and that safety, teamwork, and organisation are important to this group. Overall, I think it is a great club and look forward to being a part of it. I spoke to the president of the group, George (pictured) to learn more about the club.
