Majors and Minors Fair

My friends and I went to Majors and Minors Fair two weeks ago. I am a person who is difficult to decide things, so I have not been able to determine my own major. Before I went to this event，I hope this event can help me to decide my major.

I thought about major in finance, economic, actuary science，psychological…I thought many majors that I would like to have but I vetoed them with different reasons like this major is hard to find job；this major is hard to study；I don’t really like this major. etc. At that event time, my thought for major is human resource management or marketing and minor is new media art.

Therefore, I went to search the majors I was interested at that time which is human resource management and marketing. They gave me flyers about the major course requirements. I did gain many pieces of information from this event. I learned the marketing has 3 types; I learned if I want to have a minor in marketing I need to finish the literacy art minor first so I may finish the new media art for minor first then take the minor in marketing; I knew the management also have 3 types, the one I chose is human resource management but after this even I also interesting at operation management. Unfortunately, I can’t find the minor about new media art in that fair. This minor is the one I like most but this event didn’t have it.

Overall, this event is good to help me figure out what major courses I need to take for each major. This fair has many majors that give students to choose. However, after this event, I have still been difficult to decide a major. I think I would like to choose a major in operation management or human resource management.

Starr-prep workshop

On September 12,5:00 pm, I attended to Starr-Prep workshop for undergraduates at Starr Career Development Center. When I walked in the room, I felt the atmosphere is very serious. Everyone just sat there without any sounds, I thought I went to a wrong room so I asked a staff to make sure I was in right place.

In this workshop, Staffs presented the interview and how to create a resume to us. There is some basic information for finding a job, but I learned this information in my high school. This workshop just adds a little information to me. Staff told me how to dress during an interview, how can I introduce myself in an interview, etc. I admit this information is helpful to the students who prepare to find a job. However, I think their presentation didn’t have as much as details that I learned in my high school.

During the meeting, Staffs focus on more about resumes and career fair. They kept saying how a resume can help you find a job and how you create a useful resume, also they gave me a location that I can go and get help to my resume. I thought the location they gave to me is most helpful because I really don’t know what can I write in my resume, I don’t have any experience, don’t have any achievement even don’t get any education. Therefore, I think those skills are more help to higher grades. Then，they have been recommended us to go career fair but I didn’t go because I don’t have a resume also because of I don’t know what kind of job I want to have. Although staffs gave us couple links that can do an exam to find a suitable job, however, I still can not log in until now.

I may go the Starr Career Development Center later, I think it can help me when I need it.

Workshop Thoughts- (club-Ascend)

Last Thursday, I went to the Ascend club’s meeting at 12:00 pm with couple of my friends. Back to the convocation day, a leader in that club already introduce their club to me. This club is about Finance and Accounting and i was unsure about my major so i just have a little bit interesting of this club. We went to a small room and it contained about 30 people. Before we started the meeting, there were many foods we could get such as noodles, rice and many different kind of drinks. The staff was friendly and asked us to take foods. After we got food and signed up, the president started to present. He talked about how the Ascend work and there are 4 committee in the club. This club contain the professional development committee, marketing committee, technology committee and fundraising committee. Each of the leader of the committee introduce themselves and explain what are their jobs in this club. The professional development committee is give members the opportunities to network with recruiters, alumni, and professionals. The marketing committee is promote Ascend’s mission and events though different platforms. The technology committee, which is the most interesting one i think, in this committee you can learn to use PS, JAVA, C++…and put posts of events to the club’s website or Facebook. The Fundraising committee’s jobs are bridge to corporations, industry and professional development. They showed the video about how people like these committee and how they think it will be helpful when they join this club. In addition, this club showed a calendar of events they will have for this year, at the end of meeting. After the meeting, i was think about the major i might take but i’m really could not decide now so l may not join this club now,and may be join it later. However, the meeting was good and really could know somethings.
