Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

Networking 101 Workshop

On November 29, I went to Starr networking workshop. I signed up for it a week or so in advance on the Starr Career Development Center website. There are very strict rule when attending their workshop. You have to show up on time. If you’re 15 minutes late, you’re not into the room. You have to sign in using your EMPLID. You are not allowed to take pictures nor record any presentation. This made me take a lots of note, jotting down important details I would want to remember. When I went there, I had to stand outside the door for a while. The door didn’t open until 12:40. There was a total of 14 students that attended. It was a very small and quiet group. Some were there because of freshman seminar while others wanted to get something useful out of this workshop. We talked about what networking is and how can we use it in the most effective ways. First we identified the content, and how it relates to job search. “A network is an inter connected group of supporters who serve as resources for your job search and ultimately for your career.” We also learned how to make good impression and do informational interviews. Informational interviewing is when you find out more about career information and advice from other people that are professional and knowledgeable in the specific field. Before doing the interview, make sure to prepare and research beforehand. Ask smart questions. Last but not least, we touched upon networking etiquettes, such as dress for success, follow-up protocol with a Thank you email, maintain contact & nurture network. Overall, I’m glad I attended this workshop. It was very interesting and extremely helpful. There were a lot of things I didn’t know when it comes to networking. I hope to attend future Starr workshops.

For my future career, I planned to go to Baruch Starr Career Center this week which provides many workshop to help students entry career life successfully. Today’s event teaches students what is marketing and how to create a professional resume. Starr Career expresses the basic facts to be a marketing specialist, including the education background, major, salary expectation.

Tech Fair

On November 16th, there was a tech fair that hosted by Hillel. I was looking for an event that can help me finish the 3rd Baruch blog. Therefore, I decided to attend it. It was a great event. The founders of the new startup technology company spoke about their path to building up a company and explained how they have developed so far. I think this is very inspired because their talks not only extend the view of the world but also provided a helpful solution for the future encounter. Moreover, this event also offered students an uncommon opportunity to chat with these founders. This opportunity is so rare. It taught me a lot of things that I cannot learn from school and these things could be extremely useful after graduated from school, entering a company.  For example, one of the founders told me that corporation with your colleagues can help you solve many problems, your colleagues could be your new teacher at the company.  To sum up, this technology event offered students who attend it a wonderful advice for the future job. It is an event that you cannot miss.

Networking event

I attended a networking event in the hope it could help with my sociology research paper due soon. However, it was very different from my expectations of it. This did not necessarily help with the development of my paper, yet instead in helped with thinking of my future. I gained a new understanding and perspective on what networking truly is. I once believed networking should be idealized for meeting people to keep in contact for future career help. To be a  business engagement with less comfort as well as the will to be very outgoing. As a scary interpretation, this ideal can be seen in everyone’s conscious without fail, until shown there is another way to view this action. Networking is much simpler than this common belief because it is all about making a friend. Begin by introducing yourself and sparking different topics to push the conversation to learn things about the other person. This is meant to be a casual conversation between the two people.  As the conversation goes well and begins to see its end say “It was nice meeting you.” and get a form of contact, to stay connected.

This event was hosted by about three clubs, in which an organization came with a powerpoint to explain what is to network with other people. This represented the do’s and don’ts with a practice of networking for the rest of the events time. And the game that came to my group of two other girls also graduated Baruch college last year. We asked questions about his job, his interests and his dislikes. He also gave us pointers as freshmen in Baruch to attend more networking events and take on internships as early as possible. When looking for an internship as a senior it is much more difficult to attain, given rejections.

Major and Minor fair

Picking classes for ourselves for the first time is intimidating. I don’t know what classes to pick that will suit my ability and not so difficult. Right before the weekend my appointment time was due, the email of the Major and Minor fair came into my sight. It turned out to be very helpful.

It was during club hour on a typical Thursday. The fair was held right in the multiple purpose room where I had my convocation day. Each department has each own table and professor was sitting right there waiting for us to ask questions. I went straight to the actuarial science department, and saw my advisor – Tim. Rather than giving me pieces of advices in the crowded noisy conference room, he suggested me to go to his office hours for more detailed guidance. Later, he laid out a plan of courses that I should take for the next four semesters. And he also gave me some advice on what I can learn on my own time to backup my knowledge excel and computer programming in the field of insurance.

All in all, I am glad that I have attended this Major and Minor fair. It was simply nice to have a clear mind about my future study plan and get a step early to plan ahead. I have took a gap year off after high school, therefore I plan to take summer courses to help speed up. After the Major and Minor fair, I went to the actuarial science society. From there, the club president gave some more information on the classes I can take, which professor would be the best for certain class… It was awesome to find that there are so many people that I can actually reach out for help.

NABA

On November 16, 2017, The National Association of Black Accountants held an event called “Building a Mentee, Mentor Relationship”. In this event I was taught many subtle things on what to do when you are having a business relationship with your mentor. They talked about things like making your mentor sit before you sit when having lunch/dinner. A big subtle thing I learned that seemed strange was that do not put salt and pepper on your food before you try the food out first. If a person was to do this, it is shown as a negative trait when you and your mentor has a big age difference. One other thing that I learned in this event is to always try and order the same thing your mentor is ordering. This actually makes a lot of sense because if you order the same thing as they eat you will finish approximately the same time they are done eating, and this is really a big thing because if you were to order something different you would be taking up the other persons time.

Starr Career

I joined the Marketing Career Expo on this Thursday. I had a hard time to login my Starr Career and found an available event to join. My friend told me this workshop in last minute, so I was late when I got there. They didn’t allow me to get in at first because all the tables were full. Finally, a career director helped me to get in.

I watched several presentations from professors Barry Soloff, Anthony Perrotto, and Debi Feinman. They talked about the difference between marketing, advertising, and marketing communications.

The first professor used the power point to show us the definition about the Marketing and Advertising. Marketing include the business strategy, financial management, product development, and sales and distribution. Advertising include media planning, production, and promotion. Moreover, he also talked about the integrated marketing communications job opportunities. He introduced the digital advertising and media cooperations and so on.

Another professor used a totally different way to show us video resume. He showed us a student’s video resume who study the photographing and film. It was an amazing video which I never saw it before. He used a funny style to introduced himself and showed us several his works and job experiences. This was a brand new world to me and let me know this different way to let us understand more about myself which will help me a lot in my resume. Some company required this kind of video, and I think this can show people aintegrated and real person.

From this workshop, I learned a lot of information about how to find a job especially for the student like me who study in Marketing major. I think it’s really useful for senior who are struggling to apply company. I think I need to joined more career workshops because it will help me on finding a job in the future.

11/9/17 Baruch and Beyond Education Roundtable

On November 9th, I attended the Baruch and Beyond Education Roundtable. This event consisted of Baruch graduates from the undergraduate or graduate schools. I meet a few distinguished individuals who have an extensive work history. Some graduates at this event graduated from Baruch at least ten years or even longer! Not to mention, I meet some students who were graduating in Spring 2018 and students who were just starting out as me hopefully graduating in Spring 2021. The event was rather subtle and I felt sort of out of place since I rarely spoke to adults that I do not know except for those in my family, former teachers or friends’ relatives. The wall was only there briefly before I became immersed in a deep discussion with the alumni and their current standing in their careers where some are truly impressive and awe-inspiring. There was one person who was an English major that really caught my attention.

This person taught me the fundamentals of how English is the most important skill needed in today’s world. The career choices for English are great. I am grateful that I decided to switch from an intended accounting major to an English major because I know how useful it is. He and other graduates had particular degrees that were completely unrelated to their careers. I never knew that until now. Employers want to know if you are able to work efficiently and learn at the same time. This event really opened my eyes to the skills that people need in the workplace. For many there that night, they had degrees that are not or indirectly related to their profession. I know that my previous passion for writing and reading were not just interests but my passion. I love technology, I love reading the articles about them, and I want to write about them one day hopefully.

The Whitney Museum of Modern Art

I have been to a few Museums in which don’t catch my eye as much as this Museum did when I visited. During my break between classes, my friend and I came to explore the art and enjoy the view from the terraces on the different floors. The view of the city and the water was beautiful just as much as the art appearing so simple, but grasping a powerful message. I did not have a chance to look through all the floors, however, in the short time, I was present among the few floors I visited there was one in particular that really grasped my attention and pulled me in to visit the floor again before leaving. An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940-2017 depicts how the artists throughout history have challenged the political and social issues during their time. Every protest, no matter how big or small creates a powerful impact, further pushing people to attempt to change the negative issues damaging society. It is really inspiring to know that there are people always willing to rise up and fight against injustice without the use of violence, but do so in a creative way. Images can tell many stories when depicted certain ways. Artists chose what they want you to see and make sure the image stays with you, thinking and understanding the issue in a new light. Sometimes history can, unfortunately, repeat itself in a different form. every issue throughout society has always presented itself with a protest to show that the people have a voice and have that right to make theirs clear for all to hear. The artwork includes words, images and also items each representing a different protest to something, which all made me think of how history has formed what our society is today and how well society has taken in the conflicts and protests of the past.

Club Fair

On 28 September 2017, there was a Club Fair at NVC main gym. One of my friends told me about this event. And I thought that this event could be interesting to me so I decided to attend it. Once I entered the main gym, there are tons of clubs at the gym for students to visit. It covers from anime to finance. It is a fascinating place for students to find other students who have the same hobby as them. Moreover, the members in some clubs really know how to give a comfortable place for a new member. I signed up for photography club and Chinese club. I thought that these two clubs could fit my interests. I really like this Club Fair. Baruch offered a great opportunity for students who have the same hobby to meet together. Thanks to Baruch and founders of this event, they gave all Baruch students, especially new students, a great place to meet new friends, discovering your potential hobby, making college life more interesting.
