I scheduled an appointment with STARR Career Development Centre, to help me proceed and explore the job opportunities. So firstly, I made an appointment to draft my first resume as I had no idea how to start and how to make a resume which I could upload on my STARR profile and use for applying for other jobs too. I went there and met my career counselor. We started discussing and she explained me the format, the points to mention in my resume, the main categories that I need to cover etc. The headings included education, work experience, activities, honors and awards, skills and interests/hobbies. She was really cooperative and patient which helped me understand things even better. We had a conversation for about 25 minutes. Then she handed me a booklet which I could use to draft my resume. Then we decided that I ll make my resume covering all the points she told me to and then to again make an appointment so that my resume could be reviewed and I could make necessary changes. So after a week, I scheduled an appointment with her and went to see her. This time we started with discussing all that I mentioned in my resume. She made all the changes and she elaborated the points so well. The changes really made a difference and my resume looked a lot more professional. I told her that I don’t really have much to write under work experience but she explained and I got points to write in that section too. Then after fixing my resume, we had a conversation about how to engage in other activities and what other things I should do which could go on my resume and could make it even more stronger. Going to STARR and being guided by the counselor was a great experience and really helpful.

Writing centre workshop
I attended a writing centre workshop on October 31, 2017. It was “Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting” Workshop! In the workshop we started with the discussion on quoting. The instructor mentioned that we often use quoting in case studies, research papers etc so its important to know the proper way of quoting. He explained that quoting gives authority and credibility to us to use ideas of someone else. It presents evidence to discuss and are exact wordings of someone. Then moving on to summarizing, he explained that summary is basically the main idea of the entire essay. It is the brief version and is expressed in our own words. It usually highlights certain aspects that are useful to us. Paraphrasing is like a summary but it is about a specific paragraph and is not as short as summary. It is restating what is mentioned in the paragraph in our own words. To practice quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing, the instructor gave us an essay “The Shanghai Secret”. We all read it aloud and then discussed it. Then he gave us another paper which had summary, quotations and paraphrases from the essay given to us earlier. We all discussed and picked up paragraphs that which one has quotes, which one is summary and then which one is paraphrase. He then again gave us some sheets which had similar examples and ways of how to make our writings impressive. That was really interesting because it had examples of how to write one thing in different ways. Then the instructor told us to take our essays which we were told to bring with us and then practice on that. We all took around 15-20 minutes to do that and then discussed it with him. It was a great experience to attend the workshop and gain some knowledge on how to improve our writings.
First GIM experience
Hey, am Payal an international student from India. I attended International student organisation’s first general interest meeting on September 12, 2017.
Being an international student I was looking up to this club since orientation where I heard about them, what they are, what they do etc. This was the first club I interacted with during my orientation so I was keen to attend their meeting. It was interesting as well as informative. I met and had conversations with the President, secretary, and other various members of the club too that day.
It began with introduction of the club members then all other students who were there to attend the meeting introduced themselves. There were icebreakers. It was a great opportunity to get to know people from different parts of the world and getting to know their culture. Also this club is not just restricted to international students but it also welcomes the native students. So international students like me get a chance to know more about the city by interacting with them. The events conducted by the club in the past seemed really very interesting and enjoyable and hopefully events like that will be organized in future too so that we can attend it.
Mainly this meeting helped me know the procedures for an international student which they should ensure they are following and also other information about internships for International students which is definitely going to help in coming time. This was overall an enriching experience that what is a general interest meeting, how clubs work, why we need to join club, how clubs help you develop your personality and so on.
Baruch is so diverse and International Student Organization is one of the examples that reflects the diversity of our college. My first experience of attending a club meeting was great and am looking forward to attend more.
