On Nov 9th, I along with my English classmates went to the library workshop to learn about how to properly use citation and giving credit to sources we use in our writing. The atmosphere is calm and quiet probably because the presenter wasn’t enthusiastic enough, but we kind of liked it, she began the conversation by showing us the example of a half fill or half empty water bottle which alludes to the idea that when writing, people have different perspective and they all can be correct. To be honest, citing a source is the most annoying part when I’m writing, not because I didn’t study and understand the sources, it’s because I’ve done my research properly, but the procedure is too complicated for me, which gets me agitated. Back to the story, the librarian continued to talk different sources, such as article, magazine, journals, etc. She moved on by introducing to us the Baruch library data base, which I already learned from somewhere else. Then, she went in depth on how to borrow writing sources from all over the world because the Baruch library is connected to a wide variety of data base. Since we were in some sort of computer lab room, there were enough computers for us to use, and she demonstrated every step on how to use the Baruch library data base to us. It was hard to remember everything at once, but I at least managed to learn how I’ll be searching for sources when writing my next English paper. I’ve also learned from this workshop that there are different librarians focusing on different major or topics, which we can ask separately if we have any questions on their focused topic because they already know the research area and the experts that are designed to thoroughly explain the issue we will be discussing. Overall, the things I learned are generally interesting but some of them are also common knowledge because I may have learned them beforehand. The one thing I’ll take away is how to properly use the Baruch library data base.

Ad Hoc Major-Create your own major
On Oct 26, I was going to go home right after my class ended because it was Thursday and I do not have school on Friday, but my conscious did not let me. I had homework for both my Calc and Writing class, therefore I decided to go to the school library, so I can finish my homework without any distraction. On my way there one of my friend reminded me that there is a blog post due on Monday, but I haven’t gone to any workshop yet. Luckily, the Ad-Hoc major career planning was open, so I stayed in the library for about an hour, and then went to the workshop along with my friends. This time, I’m not as nervous as I was before when attending a workshop to discuss about my career, it’s probably because I’m getting used to it, but more importantly I had to face my reality. Ms. Kuppral, the presenter was really nice, she explained what Ad-Hoc major is all about with the help a graduate student I believe. Ms. Kuppral told us the general purpose of Ad-hoc major is and gave us some examples. Ad- Hoc basically helps students create their own major, although there is still a concentration field, but there are many more interesting things that you can add to your tedious major. Combining different variables to create an unique major sounds exciting to me, but as they explained, I still have to think about what I want to do. An hour passed, and a guy called Moises walked in, apparently he’s another assistant for this workshop. We listened to his story on how he switched different career and became a successful and well-rounded person. To be honest, I don’t think creating my own major would help me at all, but the stories and the speech they gave kind of motivate me to work harder and experience more. I didn’t want to hear what major is the best, but rather how to create your career that make you both happy and successful.
Baruch Accounting Society
On Thursday, Sep 7th, I decided to go check out the accounting club because I didn’t have any class around 12 p.m on that day. While I was waiting outside the meeting room, A dude came up and started talking to me, we started to introduce ourselves to each other, I learned that he’s name is Bhavik, and he was there to check out the club too. We briefly talked about major and reasons why we came to this meeting. At first I wasn’t sure how to explain it because I was not that passionate about joining the accounting club, but one thing he said was inspiring, “Well, at least we have some interest in this accounting club or else we wouldn’t be here.” I realized that it’s not about which club to join but try whatever you are interested in. Minutes after we got inside the room, Bhavik introduced me to another dude he knew that was also at that general interest meeting, Sam, it was surprising to me that neither of them is freshmen. After everybody settled down, the club members started to introduce themselves to us, and since it was the first general interest meeting, we started off with an ice breaker where we had to look at a zoomed in picture and guess what it is. I grouped up with Sam and Bee, a nickname I call him and formed a team of 4 and we each give our own opinion, but since it was just a game, we started joking around and guessing silly things. Total of 18 pictures were shown, and the club president announced that there were 2 winning teams, and ironically we are one of them, we gladly accepted the price of 2 pens and a bag of chocolates, and the meeting went on. The members started explaining different fields and areas that the club is involved in, and we can pick one we are interested in to join. Bee, Sam and me all decided to join the planning committee, and that was about it, met two cool guys and had a lot of fun on the first general interest meeting of the Baruch Accounting Society. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, their food/pizzas and cookies were more than enough for everybody compare to the few clubs I went before, but I wasn’t hungry at that time tho :P.
