Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DMC

Final post

There was a Major and Minors fair on Thursday 11/9. I was waiting for it for months. Although I’m not a person who interests in joining a club or a workshop, I really want to know what the majors are by being introduced in-person. I saw a million people there once I got there, it was much more crowded than I thought. Maybe it’s because people have the same idea with me. Then I decided to go to writing center to try my luck looking for an immediate help on my essay. Easily I found that I was not a lucky person. But after I went back to the Major and Minors fair, the place was not that crowded than before. Since I knew that Baruch mainly focuses on business, I thought that all other majors here in Baruch are not good. But after a look, I found that I was wrong. Those majors looked nice which surprised me. By the way I hoped that I could get into Zicklin for my expected major, but I had not decided my minor yet. I didn’t think I need to decide my minor too early. The people who were sitting behind the tables were extremely nice and willing to explain every details about the majors for me. Some of the majors for me are hard to differentiate before I went there, such as biology and biochemistry. Now I got most of their information. For my minor, marketing looked good, while I also wanted to consider about finance. It’s kind of hard for me to make choice on whatever field. I did not decide what my minor will be but I decided that if there is another Major and Minors fair being held, I will definitely go again.

Starr Career Development Center Workshop

Since there is a blog post due, I decided to go to somewhere in order to get rid of the due thing. Mistily by accident, I went into the Starr Career Development Center. Before stepping in, I looked at our student handbooks for its details. It is “the primary source of career service for undergraduate students, employees, and alumni.” I did not get the points of employees and alumni from the meeting, maybe its because my mind was actually on the midterms so even though I tried to listen carefully, I was not memorizing too much. Basically the staff talked about how important our resumes are since they are the only way for those companies to know us before an interview. And they gave much information on professional area such as how to form a proper resume, how to impress people, and how to introduce our achievements as fast as we can without being disgusting. The guy also talked about Career Fair which gives me an illusion that I was at a wrong place because I never knew what is Career Fair. It is something completely new to me. Unfortunately, I haven’t known what it is until now.  Overall, the Starr Career Development workshop would be useful for those people who really want to get a better resume and so on. For me, I think it was too early to consider about that since I need 120 more credits to graduate. But anyway I need to enjoy now, because I heard that the study will become heavier and heavier.

Ascend Club

I went to Ascend Club’s meeting last Thursday. It was awesome that you could see many people which were moving in a dark, crowded room, just like the elevators we took during the freshmen orientation. There were five group leaders of the club talking about how to success on some majors such as finance, and so most of the people there are majoring in finance and accounting. Some of the people are very funny. They were keeping joking as some ice-breakers. Some of them looked very funny and I believe they were thinking about their due assignments like me. So they first introduced themselves and their groups like what they do. They informed us about the inner structure of the club, such as the different departments within the club and what will happen if we attend the Ascend Club. And they actually talked about many of the benefits of the club. People in different groups are doing things a little bit different but generally they are looking forward to meeting their mentors to learn how to make your resume cool. The numerous opportunities were really attractive that after dressing yourself you may meet many business owners of those big company. You can talk many things to them about like being a good employee and etc. After the intro they turned on the lights, we entered a free talking session. I like soda there the most since I was thirsty, noodles were also good. As for the small meat balls, I have only one doubt. Why is every club doing that for us? Anyway. Goodnight and see you guys tomorrow.

All right then.
