Last Thursday on November 26 my friend and I decided to visit Whitney Museum of Modern Art. I have been to this museum a few times already and always enjoyed diverse exhibitions and a perfect view of the city from the terrace. This time we were lucky to get to visit a special exhibition called An Incomplete History of Protest. It presents works of different artists who are confronting diverse political and social issues of the modern day. According to the official Whitney website: “…making art as a form of activism, criticism, instruction, or inspiration, the featured artists see their work as essential to challenging established thought and creating a more equitable culture.” Take into consideration the events of the modern days and the exhibition seems to be very appropriate and provides some historical perspective on today’s issues. It also showcases how protests evolved during history and how some issues sparked the completely different type of response compared to others. On the other hand, it is called An incomplete history implying how often a lot of aspects of protest stay behind the stage especially with the development of social media. I think it is helpful to get some historical views on protests that happened in history and realize the loop of the historical events. The exhibition also displays some historical exhibits which provide a history of protests, how certain tactics were created and exploited. I really enjoyed this visit and it gave me some thoughts on conflicts and how they often repeat itself. Becuase our visit was during the break in between classes we did not get as much time as I wished we had. Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to come back and explore it more throughout.
