Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTC

Starr Career Development Center

My friends and I attended Starr Career Development Center’s fair. The fair started from 8:30 am, and they prepared good breakfast for us. Instructors were assigned to each table. We all formed a group and rotate in counterclockwise so that we can talk to as many instructors as we can.  Based on instructor’s’ experiences, the fair is mostly about entrepreneurship, running in a new business. During the fair, instructors told us what is entrepreneurship is, why they started their own business, how did it change their lives and perspectives, and what is important skill to have to run the businesses.

Entrepreneurship is the activity of setting up a business, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. Some instructors said they started their own businesses while they go to college, or instead of going to college, literally after they graduated from high school.  I thought that’s what only smart people can do. However, they also told us how it is important to go to college and learn knowledge step by step. I could find some meaning why we study in college. One common thing that I found out while I was listening to multiple instructors was that they all said communication skill is extremely important factor in business success.  Of course, in order to maintain good relationship with business partners, and also to make other people like you.

That fair was explicitly for people who interested in Business, but the many information I received was actually very useful to me. The instructors told us what entrepreneurship is in detailed which makes me become more interested in business field.  Now I feel more positive to study in college and I will be sure I can find out what I really like to do in next few years.

Club Activity

Last Friday, October 6th, I attended to first official team meeting of Model United Nation club. To get into MUN club, we had to pass selective application process and move on to net step, interview process. Since my high school didn’t have Model UN team, I was particularly interested in their activity. In the club, students are assigned countries, and we are going to introduce the country, its problems, and solution for the particular problems.

I decided to join this club primarily because I want to know more about what is happening in the world. When I was in middle school, I read a book about Seirra Leone where people have the shortest life expectancy. It is a nonfiction story written by one Japanese medical doctor who went to Sierra Leone as a member of Medical Sans Frontiers. Since then, I understood how life is like to most of the people in the world and how fortunate I was to be born in safe environment. Secondary reason is because I though it is a great way to build important skills such as leadership, and understand cultural differences.

Team members are meeting every Friday from 6 to 9 pm. It might be hard to get used to it at begging, but I want to push myself into the harder situation. Model UN team members will have chance to attend real conferences at the United Nation. My big dream now is to speech at the conference. I want to do the best I can to contribute to the team, and improve myself in this club.

American Museum of Natural History

On September 4th 2017, I went to American Museum of Natural History, which is one of the largest history museum in the world located in upper west side of Manhattan. I like spending my free time on museum because every time that I come here, there is always a new discovery awaiting for me. This picture is from in front of the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, which is my favorite place in this museum. I could enjoy dioramas of various marine organisms in an atmosphere like being inside of ocean.  The scale of blue wheal which being exhibited in the middle is especially overwhelming. The primarily reason I am interested in ocean life is because the world of deep ocean might be the most mysterious and relatively unknown area that the human race has not reached on earth. There might be new species haven’t been discovered yet or might be some clue remained for solving mystery of birth of the Earth. Going to museum broaden my perspective and world. American museum of natural history’s one of the missions is “To discover, interpret, and disseminate—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe. ” I highly recommend to visit this Museum for people who haven’t been there yet. Thank you for reading!
