Blog Post #3 – Career

Last Thursday I attended a Starr Career Development Center workshop and got to work on my resume. I want to try and get an on-campus job and for that, of course, I need to bring my resume, which I had major trouble writing. It was hard to figure out which information or experiences to include, what to exclude and how to formulate appropriate sentences. I did receive a booklet from them before, but that still wasn’t enough and I felt very unsure about what I wrote. Finally I decided to attend a resume writing workshop. The timings for those are very specific, so I did have to wait like three hours, but I think it was worth it in the end. I didn’t have to wait long for an advisor and all the workers were very nice and helpful. Finally I got to sit down with my assigned advisor and we went over all my experiences that I should include and the structure of the essay. I did actually have a lot of things written correctly, thanks to the booklet, but we expanded on all of the points I was trying to make and made sure that everything is formulated as eloquently and convincingly as possible. Now I can finally start looking for a job and making my own money!

Blog Post #2 – Student Life

Ever since I got admitted to college, I knew I would want to get involved on campus in some sort of way. Since I want to major in Management of Musical Enterprises, NYMIA (The Music Industry Club of Baruch) was the perfect club for me. The very first general interest meeting, which was on September 7th, was quite awkward for me, because I didn’t know anybody, but that quickly changed. On September 14th we met up to get to know each other better at the Musicians Mixer and it was the perfect way to erase all doubt and awkwardness. Even though most people listened to different genres than me and had a completely different relationships with music, it was still great to meet people interested in the same field as me (especially at a business oriented school like Baruch). The latest meeting I attended was the Internship Panel on October 5th. I got to learn a lot about the industry and how to approach getting an internship (which is required for me to graduate), but I also got to reconnect with a lot of new friends I made in the club. I can’t wait for the next meetings and I definitely see myself staying and actively participating in the activities the club offers!

Blog Post #1 – Academic

On Friday I went to the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology and I have to say, I left feeling a bit disappointed. The theme of the exhibition was ‘The Force of Nature’and while I enjoyed the backstory of all the pieces, the main thing that bothered me, was how small the museum was. You could get through the whole thing (while reading every single description) in less than half an hour. Maybe that’s my fault for not doing enough research beforehand, but I definitely expected to see a lot more ensambles. That being said, I did enjoy the pieces, that were featured, themselves. Even though there weren’t that many outfits presented, the diversity (in color schemes, patterns, styles, fabrics used and eras, which they mirrored) was quite outstanding. Personally, I didn’t really focus on how the artists implimented the theme in their works, but more on how each piece was created and how it made me feel. A lot of the times I wouldn’t even notice how the theme was implimented at first, because I would be so stunned by the outfit itself. In general, while I did expect much more from the museum, I definitely do not regret going and seeing the exhibition. Fashion has been a new intrest for me, so that was a great start to something that will hopefully play a bigger role for me later on.
