Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CMA

Marketing Career Expo

On Thursday, Nov. 16th, there was a Marketing Career Expo. I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about marketing because I have been somewhat interested in the field, but don’t really know a lot about it. At the expo, we were all seated at a table where there was a professional in the field of marketing that would answer questions and talk about their experiences. At the start of the expo, there was a presentation that explained the differences between marketing and advertising. I learned that advertising is just a component of marketing, and that marketing involves a lot planning and calculating the strategies for advertising. After the presentation, we were able to talk to the professionals at our tables. At my first table, we talked to someone from the company, GroupM. He is an associate director for the company and works on many ads that we see on the subway or in the media. He talked about what he does in the company and how they select interns. Next, we talked to someone from Horizon Media who works mainly on ads that we see on social media or on other websites. Overall, the expo was a good experience to learn more about marketing.

Visiting the MoMA

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, my friends and I decided to go visit the Museum of Modern Art. I’ve been there once during my freshman year of high school for an art project, but I mainly just looked at the paintings. This time, we checked out the special exhibit, which was “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”. The exhibit featured many pieces of clothing such as dresses, shirts, shoes, bags, etc. Some were more unique and you normally wouldn’t see on the streets, but were others more familiar pieces of clothing. It was interesting to see clothing displayed as art because we wouldn’t normally think about it in such a way in our everyday lives.

After the fashion exhibit, we went to the painting gallery. I saw many paintings that I remembered from the first time I went, such Monet’s Water Lilies and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. However, we didn’t have much time to explore the paintings because it was almost time for the museum to close, but it was still fun seeing all the familiar paintings.

Latinx Heritage Month Opening Ceremony

Last week, I went to the opening ceremony for Latinx Heritage Month. It was exciting for me because it was my first time attending an event related to Latinx Heritage. At the event, there was loud music that could be heard from the other floors. The music was very upbeat and catchy. There were many Latinx Cultural clubs that were promoting and explaining what they do. There were also many tables that gave out food. I got the chance to try a plate that contained chicken, plantains, and ham. Another table had two kinds of milk: an orange-flavored milk and a chocolate oatmeal milk. I was excited to try it because I’ve never heard of this type of milk. I tried the orange-flavored milk and was pleasantly surprised because it was both sweet and tangy, and kind of rich from the milk. I am glad I went to the event because it was nice seeing so many Latinx there celebrating their culture, and other people, such as myself, learning more about it. Overall, it was a great experience for my first event at Baruch.
