So it was a Thursday afternoon and I was at the library perfecting my sociology paper. After reading and re-reading my work, I grew tired of thinking about C. Wright Mills. Luckily, a fellow classmate had texted me that UNICEF was holding a General Interest Meeting at the Newman Vertical Campus. At first I was confused, why would I go to a club meeting when I had an important paper due in two hours? After some convincing, I decided to check out what this meeting was all about.
Two words: Dollar. Pizza. As soon as I walked into 4-218, dollar pizza was all I saw, consumed by both members and starving students alike. Not only was this club about feeding students, but caring for the wellbeing of children around the world. I had met with Fatima and Rosh, two UNICEF members that had taught me what the club stood for. With its fundraisers and community events, UNICEF wanted to expand awareness on crisis (crisis’?) that impacted children around the world. With my share of experience in high school volunteering clubs, I felt as though the UNICEF club wouldn’t have as big of an impact as they said they would. I was wrong! They’ve raised hundreds of dollars and distributed supplies and clothing for the needy all over the world. I shortly after decided to sign up and join the club for good.
