Enrichment Workshop #3: Career

About two weeks ago, I attended the CUNY Undergraduate Symposium at the offices of Goldman Sachs. It was brought to my attention through my Baruch email, and it really interested me since Goldman Sachs is such a competitive and highly renowned company. With its prestige reputation, I hope to associate with this company in the near future.

At the event itself it started at 10 am until 5 pm. It was a day of getting to know the company and hearing its story, and the various careers people have within the company. They toured us around the company, and how the company ran on a regular work day. Everyone was had a hustle and bustle attitude and were merely focused on what they had to get done around the office. The people there were really nice, and it was nice to hear the different stories of individuals.  Seeing the world of a corporate office, it really inspired me to further fulfill a career in the industry and made me more excited for the future of being in that world. I learned many things about Goldman Sachs and I hope to see myself in one their offices after I graduate from school.

Enrichment Workshop #2: Academic

A couple weeks ago I visited the Whitney Museum for the first time. It was such an amazing experience, the art was beautiful and the views were breathtaking. The exhibits especially, were extremely unique. Some were interactive and required your five senses in order to fully enjoy the art. The Hélio Oiticica exhibition was my favorite, it first required you to take off your shoes, where you would then venture into a world with sand underneath your feet and small rooms to explore. There were tents assembled, one with wet leaves as the floor, and another with water, while next to that would be one with pillows and headphones ready to listen to some Brazilian tunes. There would also be a maze like room where you would have to walk in the dark to find a small television, that’s playing a black and white movie. There were also “beds” with curtains sectioning each bed apart. Each bed were cushioned with all different type of things, ranging from old books, to leaves, to an actual mattress. Other exhibits required using your sense of touch, liken to touching some red sand in a bowl. As for the actual paintings, they all had a quirk to them. They were unique in their own magical way. The views from the actual building were magnificent, it was overlooking the High Line, with some interesting sculptures on the terraces of the museum. Even the staircases had art that were rather disturbing but thought provoking. There was a person with what seems to have a wedgie, but is hanging them self. This seems to portray the affect of bullying, and the consequences that could happen. The Whitney showcased art that had a deep message to them, which really made me intrigued by the museum. Art with a story is the art I truly love.

Enrichment Workshop: Student Life

In high school I’ve always been involved with clubs, and school activities. I was actually the leader of two clubs at the time, so I know how clubs work and how fun it can be. Clubs have always been a way for me to escape from the academics, and to express myself outside of the classroom. Being a leader of two clubs, it really taught me how to be in control and how to organize the functions of a club.

At first I was skeptical of FUSION, or the Filipino Club here at Baruch. I envisioned just a bunch of Filipinos talking about boring subjects like politics in the Philippines, and how the current president is an insane sociopath who just goes on a rampage killing drug dealers, but this club is the exact opposite. Surprisingly, there are more non-Filipinos than actual Filipinos in the club. The first General Interest Meeting had me hooked to this club, the leaders are down to earth, genuine people who I was extremely lucky to have met. They’re such a welcoming group of people, and have a variety of events they both host and attend. Some include trips, pageants, or even just eating together as friends. They really know how to have fun, (Filipinos do know how to throw bomb parties coming from a Filipino background) and how to bring people into their circle, just like a family. Positive vibes exudes from the club itself which is what I looked for in a club.

Clubs in high school and college are very different. In high school, it was very difficult to be able to go on trips or host events because of the lack of supplies and funds clubs can receive. As for college, there is an immense amount of activities and events, it’s insane. I am excited to continue attending FUSION’s meetings, and can’t wait for what’s in store for the upcoming years.

Perspective Major: Business Communications

The Book of Unknown Americans

Positive: I enjoyed the different perspectives the book opened to; every character had a voice in the story and really allowed me to see how they viewed America and its relation with immigration.

Negative: The lack of actuality with how immigrants have struggled in their pursuit of a better life, and the scenarios created in the story that did not capture the trials immigrants have had to deal with.
