Career Workshop blog post

Some time ago, I was lucky enough to attend an event about finding a career, organized by the STARR center. I must admit that the STARR center provides a lot of help and is one of Baruch College’s most useful clubs. It has helped many undergraduate students gain information about various important fields, including workshops, career finding, internships, mentoring, jobs, corporate presentations and has organized a lot of informative sessions.
What I really like about the STARR center is their Career Counseling. Career Counseling consists of various weekly meetings with an assigned counselor, who helps students gain information regarding their major selection, internships, career explorations, decision making and a lot of other issues that may affect their career process. They also offer a variety of assessment tools to gather information on values, skills, accomplishments, personality style, interests, as well as other areas important to career development to assist you in major selection and career choice.
It is very easy to find and to book an appointment. You can make an appointment, come in during scheduled walk-in hours or attend resume rush to have your resume reviewed by counselors and specialists. They also organize mock interviews, in order to help students be more prepared in their actual interviews.
To sum up, STARR Career Development Center is by far one of the most important clubs at Baruch College. It is easily accessible by anyone and it helps students gain information regarding jobs internships, major selection etc. Now that I got the chance to walk around and ask questions, I know where I’m going in order to get prepared for my first interview, job application, or to check my resume draft.

Student Life Enrichment Workshop

Baruch College has a lot of different clubs students can join. During Club Fair, I got the chance to visit a lot of clubs, one of them being the International Student Organization, aka ISO. The ISO representatives were very kind and helpful throughout our conversation. ISO is about bringing people together. I feel like it is a smaller version of Baruch College, since it is a club that consists of a huge number of kids, all from different economic, social and religious backgrounds. What I liked about the International Student Organization is that the leaders are very kind and help everyone, including us, freshmen, adjust and get to know Baruch better. A lot of people believe that the International Student Organization is a very important club here at Baruch College, because it is supposed to be the best place to start being active on campus! Students are able to gain information about different cultures, try different foods and experience different religions and customs. I feel like the International Student Organization is the best place to start making memories at Baruch College and meet a lot of new people from various parts of the world. For me, ISO is definitely a club I want to join because, coming from Greece, I don’t know a lot of people here in New York. As a result, this is a way for me to meet new people from different ethnic backgrounds and gain information regarding different cultures. I am very pleased I got to attend one of the International Student Organization’s meetings and I believe that a lot of kids, especially the ones coming to Baruch from different parts of the world, should take a chance on ISO. Both the leaders and the mentality of the club help in promoting a sense of equality between the kids and make sure everyone’s voice is being heard and respected.

Academic workshop (museum visit)

Visiting the MET

A few days ago, my roommate and I decided to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (also known as the MET). Moving here from Greece, I had no idea what the Met was. As soon as i walked in, i was amazed. It is definitely the biggest museum I’ve ever been to. What I loved about the Metropolitan is the fact that it has no limits when it comes to art. Art there doesn’t stop in 1900, or 2016. It feels like a living process. Also, there are so many different types of art and you never know what you’ll come across. For instance, when me and my roommate paid at the entrance they gave us a map and we started walking around, admiring all the various types of art. I would never imagine i’d come across Greek and Egyptian art. In fact, Greek art was one of the first ones we saw. As we continued walking, we were amazed by the fact that we never knew what would appear in front of us. We could stroll from an Egyptian temple to an exhibit from the Renaissance or a Ancient Greek statue of Poseidon. Even though that made the museum’s layout a bit confusing, since we were walking in different directions, trying not to miss any sections, I really enjoyed my first visit at the Met and i can’t wait for many more to come. Last but not least, another thing i admired about this museum is that it was newly renovated and even though its one of the oldest museums, it was in a perfectly good condition. If I could change one thing about my first visit, I would try to spend 1 full day there, just because there are so many things and different exhibits to see. I would definitely recommend the Met as one of the most important destinations and must-sees of New York and I look forward to my next visit there.

Introductory Post

Hi everyone, my name is Konstantinos Tsoumas and i’m 19 years old. My friends usually call me Kon.
A fun fact about me is that it’s my first year living in the United States. I recently moved in New York City from Greece.
I plan on majoring in Digital Communications.
One thing i liked about “The Book of Unknown Americans” is the way the writer made the characters interact with each other. For example, i really liked how Mayor was a “disappointment” to his father, because he didn’t join the soccer team, like his brother, but in Maribel’s eyes, Mayor was the only person who was patient enough and really loved and appreciated her for who she was and he always accepted her flaws and was willing to help her improve. So basically he was a hero in Maribel’s eyes, in contrast to the “zero” in his father’s eyes.
One thing i didn’t like in the book is that while i was reading it, it felt like something i have read before. Generally, i liked the story and the way the writer presented the characters and how the plot evolved. However, I feel like it was lacking authenticity. Maybe I was the only one who felt that because coming from Greece, there were a lot of rumors going on about how Americans treated foreigners and especially people from Latin America. But, although I really liked the book, I must admit that I was not impressed when i finished it because it felt like I had re-read the same stuff again.

And let’s not forget about my picture!
