Last Thursday, I attended the Latino Heritage Month celebration on the second floor of the Newman Vertical Campus at Baruch. I found it really nice to know that Baruch celebrates Latino Heritage Month because I was able to meet two new people of Hispanic origin at the DJ’s little dance floor and became friends with them. At first I was confused on what the ruckus was because I just came back with my friend Lilia from lunch. We were thrown off by a pleasant surprise with songs that throwback to this summer such as Justin Bieber’s, “Despacito.” The second floor was rather crowded at that time and had a long line for a photo shoot which I unfortunately did not have the chance to do. There were many students of Hispanic or Latino origins socializing and rocking their bodies to the beat of the song. I also noticed that there were many other students that are non-Hispanic or Latino celebrating with us. As someone who’s Asian, I felt a little out of place but the joyful mood and festivity eventually settled in.
As much as I thought it was cool for the school to celebrate Latino Heritage month, I do wish that it lasted longer. It would be awesome if there were food and little posters that has fun facts on the history of Latino Heritage month. I stress this because there are some questions I had in mind that were unanswered until I was home to Google the information. I’ve never really been a huge participant of school events events before so this was certainly awkward and strange for me initially. I am thankful to have met new people at this social gathering and I do look forward to other celebration of heritage months in the future such as Asian-Pacific since I am Chinese.

Enrichment Workshop 1

On Thursday, September 7th 2017, I attended a general interest meeting of the United Chinese Language Association(UCLA). The purpose of UCLA is to spread chinese culture in Baruch college. Or it could simply be a club for relaxation and for students to have fun. I attended the general interest meeting mainly because I had nothing better to do in my free time. During the meeting, the staff members of UCLA were introduced and a few icebreaker games were played. The classroom, which was completely filled with students, was first divided into two teams. Then each team chose a representative from their group to compete in the game, I do not remember the game’s name. However, the game’s purpose was for each representative to guess the possible words on the board after being given a topic and a sentence, similar to the game show “Family Feud”. The representative’s acquired their answers from their team members and began guessing the words. Each team could only guess incorrectly three times before they lost their chance to guess. After a couple of rounds, the team with the most amount of points wins. Even though I was not one of the representatives of my team, I still had fun from laughing at both team’s answer choices. Sometimes people would shout out ridiculous answers and I had a good laugh from that. The second game that I remember playing was a game called “Zoom”, where each team had to guess what the zoomed in picture on the board was. Each time a team answered correctly, they would get a point. The team with the most points in the end would win. Surprisingly, the game was relatively easy as people were able to quickly and accurately guess the picture. I do not remember whether my team won or lost that game though. After the games ended, people started lining up for food. When most of the people finished getting their food, I took a picture with Louis, who I believe to be the leader of UCLA.

Hillel Club

I chose the Hillel Club as my first of three enrichment work shops. I picked this club for a number of reasons. First off In high school I joined many cultural clubs to learn about other cultures. My mom has been employed by a Jewish non profit organization for almost the past twenty years. Through her and countless visits to her office and building strong relationships with her colleagues I have been exposed to much of the Jewish Culture. Since this I have almost an inexplicable interest in the Jewish culture. One reason I believe that I enjoy there culture is because although I’m not Muslim my late grandmother was, and their practices are very similar.

Hillel leads to great opportunities for all the students that have passed through there doors. They have Hebrew workshops, which are translated to English for all those who aren’t fluent. Another reason that Hillel gives great opportunity to its students, is because it is the largest Jewish Campus organization in the country. Extended in over five hundred countries, this creates a large network which would aid in students getting jobs and meeting new people all over the country.

Hillel also brings an interesting dynamic to Baruch. On Mondays they have twenty minute meetings in which the bring over pieces of Israel’s culture over to Baruch.

Although I’m not so personally interested into this next part, they do offer a group for Student from Russia, and those of Russian decent. I believe that this is a great opportunity for these students, because being a commuter school, It might be hard to make friends at Baruch, and this somewhat makes it easier for these students.

The Jewish Business leaders section of the club is also a part of my club that takes my interest. This is because the offer opportunities for workshops that help explore future careers, and event networking events to set you up with someone who has a job in your field of interest.

Matthew Lawlor

This weekend I went to visit my sister down in Washington D.C. to celebrate her birthday with my family and her fiance. The flight in was a bit of an adventure in of itself due to the fact that my brother left his headphones in his pocket leading to the TSA having to search every part of his body for about 15 minutes. After that we found that our flight was delayed so we went to sit down for dinner and when we came back for boarding we found that the flight had already boarded because they changed their minds about having the flight delayed and they eventually stopped the plane from pulling out so we had to run onto the plane from the taxi area and find our seats all while they taxied onto the runway for takeoff. After all this we finally landed in DC where my brother came to realize that he left his laptop at the TSA checkpoint causing us a delay of about another 30 minutes until our sister and her fiance took us back to their apartment where we could finally rest before the next day. We woke up and found ourselves going to the national archives where we saw the original declaration of independence, the original constitution and the original bill of rights which was probably one of the cooler things that I’ve gotten to see, the items on which this country was founded. After seeing those we went downstairs to where the other files of the United States archives were and found that we couldn’t actually handle any of the real papers which, to be honest, was a bit of a dissapointment. After that we went to an art garden across the street where I was thoroughly  unamused with what some people consider art these days. All in all it was a great trip as I don’t get to see my sister often and it was a blast being able to spend the weekend with her like when we were kids.

The Golden Key International Honour Society

I was determined to participate in The Golden Key International Honour Society as my enrichment workshop. This was the only club that seemed to catch my interest as i was also a part or Arista & Archon Honor Society during my years in high school. For the most part growing up, I always had the desire to academically be impressive and distinguishable from those around me. Prestigious groups that added a significance to your impression on teachers is something I yearned to take part of. The Golden Key Club was the most tempting opportunity for that just had to take advantage of. At Golden Key, its much more than just being a good student, its about being scholars that are looked up to. They strongly believe in the knowledge they possess to help the arising conflicts and struggles of life around them everyday; they strive to be leaders. Once you become a part of this, it helps you unlock the full potential within your intelligence, expands your insight, and also adds a very professional recognition to your name. It is also the world’s largest collegiate honor society, and membership is by invitation only exclusively to the top fifteen percent of college and university sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This society was established in nineteen-ninety seven. Once committing to it, you are expected of a high standard of scholastic achievement, and an ethos of integrity, innovation, respect, collaboration, and diversity. All these modest qualities would set examples for the younger students following our footsteps. It is only right that we have pass our knowledge down to them. Academics, leadership, and service are the significant pillars of this honorable society. I believe that being a part of it would have an everlasting effect on the student to see the best in themselves and always finding a way to improve themselves.

Suicide Prevention Awareness

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and upon reaching the second floor, I immediately noticed the banner promoting this. My friend, Lilia, and I were initially hesitant to approach the people who were a part of this group but, eventually, we found our way to them. (They were also offering free breakfast and so that was a great additional incentive.)

There was a big board besides them that neatly presented numerous statistics on suicide in America. One fact that stood out to me was that suicide is the third leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 24. We were then thoroughly informed about the importance of this month and how much it could affect those who may be going through a similar situation. Stress from school, home, peers, or from the online world can all lead someone down this dangerous path. In order to further avert future suicides, these students were adamant about helping to prevent any such event happening in Baruch.

After finishing our croissants, Lilia and I were then asked to participate in a short writing activity. In a few words, we  had to write down what we believed our purpose in this world is. Many people often feel like they may not have a role in the world but by doing this activity, they wanted to encourage a feeling of importance and belonging within each and every person. However it was incredibly difficult to come up with an answer. Not because we were suicidal but because it felt egotistical to state how important we were to the world. Eventually we came up with something and our input was added to the large collection they already had. Though this experience was short, it still taught me a lot about how people perceive themselves and the importance of educating oneself about the dangers of suicide.

Dayea- Unicef

(Sorry i didn’t know that my face had to be in it)

Unicef stands for United Nations Children’s Fund. It is a global organization where they fund to improve the lives of children in help. They protect the rights of children and do anything they can to make their lives better. They try to help every child who is in need of help or under the circumstances of poverty or any type of violence. They know that every child has potentials to do anything so they try their best to support them rather it’s by providing them money or giving them opportunities.

I went to this club on Thursday September 7th for one of the blogs. I picked this club because I was a member of Red Cross in high school and Unicef is a club that does similar things as Red Cross. During this club, the President and the members told us what unicef stands for and provided us information on what Unicef as a club does. They had a powerpoint to present us what they did throughout the past few years they were in the club and what they’re looking forward to do. After going to this meeting, I plan to join Unicef and become a member to help out other children in need of help as well. The members persuaded me with their powerpoints on what they’re looking forward to do as a club to join and become a member of Unicef. I think this is a good club for me to be in at Baruch because I think helping people who are under you is a must especially when you know that they’re limited to certain things. Also, joining a club is a good way to get close to other students in the school.
