Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC14

Blog Post #3

On November 14,2017, despite the lack of workshops that peaked my interests at the Starr Development Center, I attended a Business Career Enrichment discussion which spoke about finding a purpose in what we want to do with our lives and what exactly it means to follow a major before, during, and after college. A lot of the material was rather repetitive, but at the end of the discussion, students were open to ask the speakers. Some short videos were also intriguing. What I found most useful were the particular experiences each person shared throughout or outside one’s college career. One individual mentioned to always presenting yourself straightforwardly whenever getting the chance to network, participate in an interview, and perform routineĀ tasks in general. Beforehand, I didn’t see a purpose in that statement, but now that I see it in action almost every day, face to face or online, I believe it is much more than it seems. I felt the workshop had more to do with students who had a goal rather than business students working toward a degree. Overall, I gained experience on how I should view opportunities and business insight.

Although there were no events or workshops which peeked my interest join, I attended the club fair in hopes to discover anything worthwhile. I walked by several clubs including UNICEF, a club designed to organize students to facilitate the survival, protection, and development of children worldwide and Traders Club, one that is deeply involved in helping students learn and receive information about financial markets. I chose the latter option as it was much more insightful and believed this would aid me in the long run. My first experience with trading simulations and seminars was quite brief and provided examples of the very basics. I look forward to familiarizing myself more with Baruch and other workshops.

Writing Workshop (Blog Post #1)

The services over at Writing Center provided a deeper analysis of what to expect as college students for a majority of writing assignments. Involvement in various activities along with an introduction to students who share a similar interest got me in the habit of understanding certain practices in essay formatting, sentence structure, and citations in their highest expectations to enjoy the moment. The experience demonstrated a way to approach not only essays and long prompts, but also writing in general. What sparked my interest was the variety of workshops that involved different assignments. As for the one held on September 7, 2017, students were given a list of questions of what makes good writing. In short, the workshop is just one of the many free resources Baruch has to offer and to spend one’s leisure time. Staffed by professional writers, the area is a creative and friendly environment for students who wish to hone their writing skills.
