Last Thursday I attended my first academic enrichment workshop. I went to the tech fair in Baruch. The tech fair was mostly very boring, although I went with many of my friends. Having people there that I knew made the fair tolerable (for a short amount of time). The fair was pretty much just a panel discussion of four tech companies. I did not stay the entire time, and when I was there I was only listening for about ten minutes. Although, for the most part, I did not gain much from the fair, I was listening to the panel when they focused on one core idea. An idea they focused on was that you have to be persistent. They said that you will most likely fail to get to where you want to be at first, but that the people who are where they want to be, in terms of a job or business, failed at least once prior to reaching their goal. They closed with stressing that you should not become discouraged by failure, and actually you should become more determined if you’ve failed. Overall the fair was pretty unnecessary and a waste of my time.
Majors and Minor Fair
When I went to the majors and minor fair I learned a lot. I learned more about my intended major finance and potential minors. I learned that there are a lot of branches of finance such as risk management, and others that I’m not sure of the specific names but know the roles and work behind them. I learned that Marketing, Actuarial science and Financial Mathematics (and other math related fields) have the potential to make a lot of money but Baruch doesn’t have to many good math teachers from my experience and so I don’t know if I will major in a math related field. For my minor I may do something code related but I think about my resume and I want something I’m interested in and that would impress employers. I’m thinking about cis, psychology, or maybe financial math. I’ll debate the minor more but I’ll probably stick to a finance major because I’m in a club for the major and I heard Baruch is good for the major.
STARR Development Center
I visited the STARR development center to revise my resume for internships. I had a solid resume already that had been edited twice, but I wanted to polish it and make it seem professional in order to secure any summer internships throughout my college career. I learned a lot of things at this center about organizing the resume and highlighting the important achievements first and foremost to impress the employer.
The selfie I took was taken quickly because the room was packed and I didn’t want anyone to think of me as a crazy person so I snuck it in really quickly.
Majors and Minors Fair
I went in to the fair with my mind set on Finance as a major, but I was not really sure about which minor I would want to pursue. I left the fair with so many options, like law or many others that have my mind spinning with possibilities. I am so excited about my education prospects here at Baruch College, and this fair really help show me that I made the right decision.
I’m still unsure about where I want to minor and what I am and am not allowed to minor in, but that’s a conversation for another day and I’ve got too many tests to study for to focus on this decision.
Kevin Diaz Gochez – Accounting Society
After a very long day at school, I stumbled upon the event that would change my life. I always wondered what I want I would become when I left college. I did not expect today to change my perspective on life. It all started when I received an email in my school inbox. When I opened it up, I was greeted by a myriad of dates for clubs and events. As i glanced down the list, one name stood out to me, “The Accounting Society”. The name resonated in my head. It was then that I knew that I would have to attend this event. My curiosity overwhelmed me and I knew that this would be the highlight of my educational career at Baruch. When I entered the room, I saw several like minded peers. Each of them from different educational backgrounds and they were all pursuing a variety of minors and majors. I thought to myself, “what a wonderful club.” The entire experience was very inspirational, the accounting society will serve as a foundation for the rest of my career.
Accounting Society
It was a dark, stormy day. My life was left with no opportunity, no belonging, no purpose. But as I was walking down the dimly lit halls of Baruch, my heart was awakened. I saw my shining light, my opportunity, my purpose. All of a sudden, I was overwhelmed with emotions, ready to burst. All I wanted to do was let it out. The Accounting Society was the perfect way to express my emotions. As I walked into the room, I was filled with joy, fear and thousand other emotions that I had not felt in my entire life. If it weren’t for this club, my life would’ve remained empty, longing for a purpose. Fortunately, that isn’t the case anymore.
Thesis Workshop
I went to a workshop at the Writing Center focused on writing thesis statements and how to make them consice and efficient. The lecturer was very nice and made the workshop fun and entertaining. Here we were presented with a scenario involving arguments from two different sides, and were given example thesis statements that were both weak and strong, and how we can use these examples to improve our own thesis statements in our papers. In addition we were given a paper listing sample thesis structures that would make our essays more formal and our thesis statements less vague. Overall it was a knowledgeable experience.
Academic Post
I went to the starr research center, while i was there i got my resume looked at. They gave me a lot to change and think about. I think that the starr center is a very useful tool that students can use.
Majors and Minors Fair
I attended the Majors and Minors fair last week and let me tell you; I am not joking when I tell you I had the time of my life! There were so many interesting majors and minors that I could hardly contain myself. I walked around for a little while and browsed the tables to see what I could get myself into. I decided that I would be interested in Law. I thoroughly LOVE law. Criminal, commercial, intellectual property, all of it.
So, logically, law is the right fit for me and the Majors and Minors fair helped me decide that. I am also interested in Political Science because I plan to go to law school after I graduate from Baruch. I am not really sure which one I am going to decide to do so I have to do a little bit more research before I am going to be 100% confident in what I decide to choose upon.
Maybe if anyone has any advice they could let me know since we are the strongest learning community ever to reach Baruch College. I am open to any advice and I would also recommend attending if you are unsure about your major or minor.
STARR Resume Workshop
On Tuesday, November 7th, I went to a STARR workshop called Mastering the Job Interview: Basic. The workshop was conducted by Kaitlyn Riley, who is the assistant director of the Starr Career Development Center, and she gave tips for everything before, during, and after the interview. I also was really glad to have been given a packet with all the information I would need, along with the notes that I took on her entire presentation. It was really informative and would really recommend it for those who need a good overview on the basics of preparing for a job interview.
