EXTRA EXTRA BEARCAT NATION – AFRICAN AMERICANS IN BUSINESS (BEARCAT SPECIAL)

The weekend of October 10-13 was the annual NABA Eastern Regional Conference in Bathsheba, Maryland. 665 College students from several East coast schools were in attendance and for the weekend were all about internships and networking. The Big 4 accounting firms : EY, PWC, Deloitte and KPMG sent representatives to recruit students to enter their firms some as interns and some as  employees. Over the weekend there were mandatory sessions that introduced students to office etiquette , the do’s and don’ts of networking etc. all tools to add to their arsenal of talents to use in the workplace. This was during the days but at night we “turned up”. Thanks to the “Freshmen of the year” Tosin  Onabanjo and Dexter James Kingston the Bearcats took home the title for “School with the most school pride”. They edged out Virginia State University , Towson University , University at Albany and Rutgers University in the finals.

Netflix Hits Milestone and Raises Its Sights

Netflix has taken over the the media society after the decline of Blockbuster, for $8.99 a month viewers can watch a wide variety of popular shows and movies at the push of a button.Unlike Blockbuster where you would have to rent a DVD, Netflix takes away the hassle of late fees and saves you the trip to the store. Netflix is seeing rapid increase in subscribers and has reached the 30 million mark for the first time. Netflix is a great tool to have not only for personal/home entertainment but also in classrooms. I have seen teachers use it to show Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima and Civil war videos. This proves the versatility of Netflix as a learning tool as well. I would expect the gradual incline of Netflix in the next couple of years unless a supercompany comes up with a better version of the site but unless that happens Netflix should still very much in business.

The Ethics of Business, and Free Market Economy

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/20/questions-for-free-market-moralists/?hp

Is the free-market system of economy, in which you justly deserve everything you earn, really the most humane system for us?  The Nozickian thinking which has increased significantly among Western governments within the last five decades is defined by the belief that everybody will be as wealthy as they deserve to be in proportion to their talents. The editor argues against this thinking by using principles of John Rawls to combat the morality of the Nozickian system. Through four questions author argues that people could be coerced into a deal without physical force, that not every free deal is morally right, that you don’t necessarily earn as much wealth as your talent would suggested bringing into an example individuals like Edgar Allan Poe, and finally that people should have common obligations that would benefit everybody. This article creates many thoughts on whether or not ethics should be looked at as an integral part of businesses, and economy.

Making A Stand for Reform at Grambling, and at the N.C.A.A.

After years of talk between the players’ union and the NCAA, disputes escalated when Grambling State’s football team boycotted practices and eventually forfeited their game on Saturday.  There has been long debate on whether or not NCAA athletes should be able to endorse companies and receive pay for it.  From the player’s standpoint they believe this should be absolutely allowed seeing that it could greatly benefit them, but the NCAA believes that this should be forbidden, which they have done through the NCAA rules.  The athletes, especially those that attend powerhouses such as Alabama and Oregon, generate lots of income for these schools through their outstanding play.  As a result of their play lots of people pay to see them play, but only the University gains from the profits, which is unfair.  This is what has angered many athletes and has lead them to extreme actions such as this boycott.

Lakers in Business!

Dwight Howard left the Los Angeles Lakers after simply a year of discontent, instead picking the Houston Rockets for a potential future of success. This leaves Lakers fans in disarray.

Dwight Howard left the Los Angeles Lakers after simply a year of discontent, instead picking the Houston Rockets for a potential future of success. This leaves Lakers fans in disarray.

Although the Los Angeles Lakers lost a centerpiece for the future in Dwight Howard this past summer, there are still things to look forward to. One of the major plans they’ve initiated years before was for the upcoming summer of 2014. All of their players’ contracts end at 2014 with the exception of Steve Nash. With a “bonanza” of talented players coming off the books next summer (LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay), Laker fans can look forward to superstar talent accompanying Kobe Bryant once again in just a year!

Balmain and a Briefcase

Balmain S/S 2014

Balmain S/S 2014

While the fashion industry may seem all glitz and glamour, at the end of the day expensive clothes means there is a business working behind the scenes. The designers at Paris Fashion Week let us know the working woman hasn’t been forgotten and in fact, she’s become the main focus for the season. The personal favorite, displayed at the top, is from Oliver Roustieng, creative director for Balmain. The collection is filled with the usual Balmain jackets and sporty wear but instead of chunky gold and edgy pieces of denim, there is a more sporty morning work attitude with shoes that are stylish and totally made for walking. No more of these short, black, kitten heels women have been subjected to for the office, now Nina Ricci and Carven are giving us slacks with florals and basic colors mixed with hints of color and thicker heels. Who said business formal meant boring and colorless? The shift in these designer looks has a lot to do with younger minds taking over these lasting brands and realizing that women are an increasingly important part of the business world and we love to look good. The original article can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/27/fashion/Sport-Is-the-Story-in-Paris-Fashion.html so enjoy.
