Making A Stand for Reform at Grambling, and at the N.C.A.A.
After years of talk between the players’ union and the NCAA, disputes escalated when Grambling State’s football team boycotted practices and eventually forfeited their game on Saturday. There has been long debate on whether or not NCAA athletes should be able to endorse companies and receive pay for it. From the player’s standpoint they believe this should be absolutely allowed seeing that it could greatly benefit them, but the NCAA believes that this should be forbidden, which they have done through the NCAA rules. The athletes, especially those that attend powerhouses such as Alabama and Oregon, generate lots of income for these schools through their outstanding play. As a result of their play lots of people pay to see them play, but only the University gains from the profits, which is unfair. This is what has angered many athletes and has lead them to extreme actions such as this boycott.
