Enrichment #4-Sophie Ryan-Cuny ID:23881473

For my last enrichment workshop, I did the career category. My friend, Angelina, and I went to the Starr Career Development Center for a career workshop on how to master a job interview. I’m super happy I went because it was very helpful. The presentation and the packet they gave contained a lot of good and useful information in it. I didn’t know what to expect going in but it was a very welcoming environment because of how friendly and engaging the instructors were when they were giving the presentation. I also liked how they gave a lot of time for people to ask questions because there are a lot of what-ifs when approaching a job interview. I have an internship so I have been on an interview before and I have also worked three part-time jobs in my past so I have had experience with that as well but I still wanted to expand my knowledge on it. Job interviews are unfortunately that type of thing that you have to prepare and practice for almost every time because of how you are put on the spot. Also, you can never really know for sure what the interviewer is going to ask you but that is why informational classes like STARR workshop is great. One really good piece of advice they gave is to follow the acronym STAR when sharing success stories during the interview. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. This is helpful because during an interview you may be asked how you overcame something and had success and STAR provides an easy way to help you stay on track and not rambling on when telling your success story. Another good piece of advice is when asked “what is your weakness”, we were suggested to not try to turn a strength you have, like being a perfectionist, into one of your weaknesses. This is because it can sound ungenuine and too scripted. I enjoyed this career workshop and plan on going to another one soon!

weekly reflection

Today was the last day of FYS and to be honest I feel that this class helped me transition from high school to college very easily. This is because it taught me that sometimes in life/college, you have to do things that your not always happy to do but you have to suck it up and do it anyway. For example, the weekly reflections and monologues were not my favorite assignments but I had to do it regardless of what I thought. Also this class helped me acclimate into the Baruch events smoothly. If it wasn’t for this class, I would never have gone to a sports event or a STARR career workshop so I am very grateful I was forced to take this class.

My week has been pretty busy. I had a psychology test today which I was very nervous for. I was nervous because I didn’t do as well as I wanted to to do and it was stressing me out because it would negatively affect my grade. I stayed up super late everynight to study which was super exhausting and taxing but it honestly paid off because I felt confident after taking the test. There were a few questions I was unsure about but I hope I used my prior knownledge to pick the right knownledge. I hope I get my grade soon and hope it is a good one!

This week was pretty good. I had a lot of work though, so I stayed up very late almost every day of the week. At FYS, a woman from the STARR center came and she spoke about the STARR career center and the programs they offer. I knew the STARR center was good but listening to the woman speak, I realized how much the center has to offer.  After realizing how much they offer, my friend, Alex, and I went to a STARR career workshop that day. The workshop was taking a headshot for Linkedin. I am really happy I took a headshot because now I feel ahead of the game. My dad always told me to create a Linkedin profile as soon as possible so I can begin making connections as soon as possible. I am happy I participated in a STARR workshop because it gave me an advantage for my Linkedin profile and future.

This week was definitely a stressful one. I had many assignments due and I have three tests this coming week so I was grinding every single night for hours at a time. Math is my only class that I am having a very difficult time with because each homework takes me about 2 hours if  I am working only on that and my teacher will give us two to three homework’s due on the same night. So, I can easily spend up to 4 hours on my math homework in one night.  I also dislike my professor because she teaches as if the material is simply just review and we have all learned it in our past, but for me, at least, that is not the case since I have only taken precalc. Besides the math homework, my week has been pretty good. I went to my internship on Friday which went well. On Fridays, in the office, they always serve food which I like because I am a broke college student!

weekly relfection

This week was pretty good. I didn’t have too much work, which was good. But  I had my philosophy midterm, which was the only downside to my week. I studied a lot though, so I think I did well. It was my only midterm for this semester, which was definitely a good thing. I went home for half of the weekend and it was nice to catch up with my family. I missed my sister because I feel like I haven’t seen her in forever. I see my parents more than her because my dad works in the city and my mom comes here a lot to visit. I also missed my cats. My kitten Bean is getting so big and I wish I was there to witness it. I also like going home because my mom stocks me up with anything I need, like paper towels, toothpaste, detergent, etc.

Sophie Ryan Enrichment Workshop

For my enrichment workshop, I went to an athletic event. I went to a Baruch women’s volleyball game vs Wilkes University. I went with my friends Alex, Gianna, and Cam. My friends and I took a bus to the event because it was in Jersey City, NJ. Honestly, it was a good game. The Baruch woman beat Wilkes 3-0. I was very impressed by the Baruch Woman’s Volleyball team because they were very seasoned. I was also impressed in general because when you think of Baruch, you think of business, not sports. Considering Baruch isn’t a big sports school, it was overall an excellent game. To me, volleyball is one of those games where it is exciting to play and watch. It is a very fast-paced game and I enjoy any sport that has quick movements and restarts. Seeing the game honestly made me miss volleyball. I used to play in 8th and 9th grade and I loved it. Volleyball requires so much skill and technical abilities that I don’t think many people realize. Anyone can hit a ball over a net, back and forth but there is a specific way in which you hit the ball in volleyball. The right way to bump, set, spike, and serve in volleyball requires a lot of skill and practice. Also, volleyball hurts, from what I remember. Even though you use knee pads, it still hurts when you slide and bang your knees on the ground. I actually remember having a lot of bruises on my legs from volleyball. Also sometimes when you hit the ball with your wrists/forearms, ( the correct way to hit a volleyball) you get a lot of bruises and red marks that actually leave you very sore for the next few days. Overall, going to the game was a very good experience for me. I enjoy sports in general but going to this game brought back good memories of when I used to play. I am happy I finally went to an athletic event at Baruch and I even may start to watch more volleyball in general because I had an overall good experience.

Sophie Ryan weekly relfection

This week was pretty good. I have become a lot better at not procrastinating and getting on top of my school work. I normally study in my dorm room but this past week I started studying in the study rooms in my dorm building and in the Baruch library. Doing this honestly helped me become more focused and I completed my work a lot quicker than normal. From now on I will continue to do that because it is helping me stay motivated and driven. One annoying thing that happened this week is that my fridge in my dorm room keeps leaking. Of course, when my roommate and I had the maintenance men come in to check it out, the fridge was not leaking so they did not believe us. It leaked this morning though, so I put another work order in to get it fixed. Hopefully, they fix it soon so I don’t have water on my floor every day anymore!

weekly reflection

My week went very quickly because we keep having days off. I had a great weekend because my boyfriend visited me for a few nights. He goes to college upstate so it took him about 5/6 hours on the bus to get to the city. I also had two tests that Monday,  so it was annoying having to study a little bit while my boyfriend was here. After he left Sunday afternoon, I studied a lot so I could be prepared for my tests the next day. I think I did really good on my Music in Civilization test and pretty decent on my Calculus test. I hope I receive the grades soon!

Weekly Relfection

This week has been pretty good. I changed roommates and dorm rooms, which turned out better than I expected. My old roommate and I are very good friends and everything went well but our neighbors were having problems. We were both friends with both of the girls so we mutually decided to switch. I like my switch because I have a bigger room and my new roommate is one of my best friends. I like having a bigger room because it is easier keeping everything organized and neat. In my old room, it was hard to stay tidy because there was nowhere to put anything, besides my desk which looked messy overtime. I am happy I made the switch and hope it continues to go well with my new roommate!
