Weekly Reflection #3

I had an overall good week. I am still having a problem with procrastination though, but I am trying to work on it because my workload is just increasing by the day and I have to stay on top of it.  But I am enjoying all of my classes for the most part. If I am being honest, I am not too crazy about Music in Civilization. I find it hard to pay attention because I am not interested in the actual course work. On Friday, I went to my internship which was good. I have had a paid internship at Sunham Home Fashions in the city for the whole summer and am going to continue it once a week for the entirety of the school year. My boss let me leave early if I brought a box to FedEx which was pretty nice of her because I was super tired from a long week. My friends from back home visited on Saturday. They slept over at my dorm and it was super fun. I was really tired on Sunday so I just caught up on homework and sleep. It was overall a pretty good week.

Enrichment Workshop #1 – Sophie Ryan 23881473

For my Enrichment Workshop this week, I chose the academic option. I went to the Museum of Modern Art (The MoMa) before it was temporarily closed due to renovation. I really enjoyed the MoMa because it is such a beautiful place. It is a big building with natural light overlooking Manhattan. The MoMa is beautiful itself but it also displays some beautiful artwork. The MoMa’s collection of art carries a variety of mediums and works. The museum carries oil paintings to sculptures to technological medium work. There are multiple rooms in the MoMa but I really enjoyed the Andy Worhol exhibition. I think he was a great artist because he took simple things with not a lot of details and made it art. For example, he used a picture of Marilyn Monroe, turned it into pop art, and incorporated repetition in the piece of the same Marilyn Monroe image using ink printing. Ink printing is when the artist carves out the image they desire in a piece of linoleum. When they have their desired image in the linoleum, they cover it in ink, press a paper to it, and put it through a cranking machine to press the paper and the linoleum together so when you peel the paper off, there will be the desired image on the paper in ink. Ink printing sounds complicated and it is! I used this medium in AP art last year. It is very time consuming and frustrating because the ink won’t always turn out perfect every time. For this reason, I give Andy Worhal major credit for creating such beautiful art using ink printing. One very popular piece done by Worhal was “Campbell’s Soup Can”. This is one of Worhals most seem pieces and it is just the same picture of a soup can over and over again.  Out of the Warhol exhibition, this was the piece of work that seemed to have the most attention from people observing the exhibition. I find it very fascinating how something so straightforward like a can has the ability to grab so many people’s attention, including mine. I think it is because repetition is striking to the eye. With all of that being said, I really enjoyed my day at the MoMa and am hoping to return once the renovations are done!

Weekly Reflection #3

Looking back at my past week, I can honestly say college has been going pretty well. I really enjoy the school and the people in my classes and dorm building. I have had a lot of work after class everyday but have still managed time to make many friends and do fun things with them. I also feel very independant which I like. I don’t mind doing my own laundry or making my own food. I have only had one test so far, for Musical in Civilization. I did well which made me happy because every test, quiz, or assignment counts a lot twoards your GPA here. I have been pretty exhausted though, because I have had a lot to do after class everyday. I also feel it is hard to sleep in late or catch up on sleep in college because there is always something else I could be doing. Because of this, I went to my home in Long Island this past weekend so I could rest and hang out with family. I spent time with my family and kitten who I have definitely missed. I also went to the annual soccer game played by the Varsity soccer team in my school. I have been playing in that game since 8th grade so I wanted to go. It was a very weird feeling watching the team, I have been on for years prior, playing in front of me. It was nastolgic though, and I’m happy I went. It was nice to catch up with my family and friends, but I still wanted to go back to college. I enjoy the feeling of being free and doing things on my own time. I don’t have to check in with anyone before I go in anywhere which is awesome to me. With that being said, it is easy to procrastinate when I have a lot of work to do. I always end up thinking of a million other things I could be doing instead of my work, like working out, cleaning, hanging with friends, netflix, food, and the list could go on and on. But I have really been trying to prioritize my work first and do everything else second. I enjoyed my past week at college and I am excited to make more memories.
