Congratulations to all the Teams for their hard work and making it this far in the CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition 2018. After reviewing their submissions for Milestone#2, the following ten teams have been able to make it to the next round.

Business Case Title: NYCapable: Advocating for Mental Health in New York City

1-minute video : By analyzing Social Media posts, NYCapable will be able to identify Individuals who are struggling and provide them NYC mental health resources specific to their case.

Business Case Title: The Fairer NYC Bail Algorithm.

1-minute video: CivicAI plans to reduce bias within the NYC Court System’s bail determination algorithm by using IBM Watson and modern data science tactics.

Business Case Title: Utilizing IBM Watson in Addressing Child Abuse

1-minute video :Child abuse is a real issue that occurs with little to no hints, our project aims to utilize data science techniques alongside IBM Watson to identify and mitigate child abuse.

Boot Camp was organized on March 23rd and 24th, 2018, at ACS – Children’s Center, 492 First Ave, New York, NY 10016.

DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP

Artour Parmakian from IBM conducting the Design Thinking Workshop at Baruch College.

This workshop on March 2nd, 2018 was held from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at Room # 301, Baruch College,135 E 22nd St, New York, NY 10010

This workshop provided students a unique opportunity to work with IBM professionals on developing a plan for carrying out your project to completion. The workshop helped refine teams’ projects’ problem statement, identify stakeholder who might be impacted by the projects and other topics related to successfully completing the competition. The focus of the workshop was on helping teams “plan for success”.

Teams came prepared to discuss their project and submitted prior to the workshop a copy of the statement to the competition organizers at [email protected].

INFORMATION SESSION

The Orientation/Information Session on the 15th of February on CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition 2018 went extremely well with over 130 students attending, from multiple CUNY campuses.

Dr. Stan Altman, the director of the CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition speaking to the participating students during the Orientation.

During the event, Patrick and Helen Lam from IBM Corporation gave a presentation on Watson AI and Cloud Services. Likewise, Youssef Kalad and Jeremy Goldberg from NYC Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer gave a presentation on proposed Census 2020 project. The representatives from IBM and the City were so energized by the queries raised by the highly motivated participating students.
