There is no doubt that New York Fashion Week’s most anticipated show is this Tuesday evening’s Oscar De La Renta pre-collection. From dressing first ladies, to A-list actors, and countless debutantes Oscar De La Renta has never failed to stun. “When you think Oscar, it’s the ultimate expression of femininity-pure. I think of an impeccably dressed woman.” says Rolando Santanta a designer whose collections are inspired by 18th century European aristocracy. Designer Paul Peñaranda admits that “not having the famed designer at this years Fashion Week felt like there was a big empty space.” De La Renta who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2006 passed away on October 20th at the age of 82. While his legacy will never be forgotten, Oscar has left behind his first ever creative director and heir to his 42nd street thrown, Mr. Peter Copping. Copping was esteemed by Mr. De La Renta to be “a great talent … along with our shared design sensibilities, we both have a deep curiosity about the wider world, from music and art to architecture and gardens.” Alex Bolen, Mr. De La Renta’s step son in law stated, “the first thing Oscar said to me was I don’t want to end up like Bill Blass.” Mr. De La Renta added, “My hope is that, in leading this selection and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand.”
The deal between De La Renta and Copping was finalized in August and revealed to the public on October. Seven days later Mr. De La Renta passed away. A loss of an irreplaceable celebrated designer and more importantly a truly honorable man. What was supposed to be Mr. Copping’s first day on the job, turned out to be Mr. De La Renta’s memorial service. “That is when I truly understood the magnitude of what I had taken on,” says Copping. “I feel kind of cheated, I would’ve liked to get to know Oscar.” The legacy of De La Renta is further being commemorated with last weeks announcement by Mayor Bill De Blasio of naming a Manhattan street after the designer.
Although, Copping has huge shoes to fill, De La Renta’s decision is held in good faith. Boaz Mazor who had worked alongside De La Renta for 45 years says, “Oscar was known to have great instincts about people.” One thing is sure, all eyes will be on Mr. Copping tonight as he unveils his first show for Oscar De La Renta.
