The Future of 3-d Printing
When 3-D printing technology was first announced, it drew a lot of attention because of the infinite amount of possibilities it brought. People thought that it was going to change the world right away. People believed that 3-D printing would replace factory workers and manufactures over night. However, the technology was simply not advanced enough when it was first introduced. It took several years for the technology to progressively get better and actually be able to produce parts.
3-D printing was first used to print simple parts like screws and nails. These were easy to design on the computer and relatively easy parts to print. As time went on, 3-D printing technology advanced and we were able to start printing moving parts. We are now able to print very complicated objects through 3-D printing; objects that I’m not sure were possible to be handmade. According to Gizmodo, 3d printing can produce “Mind-Boggling Spherical Gears,” objects that were never possible to make previously.
Every day 3-D printing technology advances and it amazes me what new items we can print out of a 3-D printer. Besides moving parts and tools, 3-D printing has been helping with advancements in the medical field. According to CNN article “3-D printed organs are on the way,” it is possible that we may be getting human tissues through 3-d printing. . Only 30% of Americans are organ donors and an average of 21 people die daily from not getting organs in time. However, with organs possibly being able to be printed in the future, this issue would not be a problem anymore. If a patient needs a new kidney, they can get one relatively fast. This will also possibly shut down the black market for organs since it will render actual human organs worthless, assuming it can be printed.
With the endless possibilities that 3-D printing has brought, the question of what is the limit has to be asked. 3-d printing is a relatively new technology and the line of what is right or wrong to print is a grey area. If a person buys a 3-d printer, what are the limits of what they can print? 3-D printing can throw many laws into question, one of them being gun control laws. Should a person be allowed to print a weapon at home? A Japanese man was recently arrested and given a two year sentence for printing a gun in his home. This shows that there are limits of what a person can print but the exact line between right and wrong is still not set. As the technology progresses, there will be more ethic issues that arises and there has to new laws set regarding 3-d printing.
