“Go away. I am not making myself ill.” No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window.
Story of An Hour By Kate Chopin
This quote is used in Story of An Hour to show the irony of the story. The story is about a woman named Mrs. Mallard who has a heart disease and finds out her husband has died in an accident earlier today. Mrs. Mallard ends up locking herself in her room and goes through a series of illusions where she is shown to be extremely happy. She realizes that she never loved her husband and that his death has actually brought her joy. The irony of this story is that, the reader finds out towards the end that the husband never died. He returns at the end and she ends up dying from her heart disease. This quote is ironic because Mrs. Mallard insists she wasnt making herself il when in reality she was. She was already slwoly dying during this time in her room. She said she was drinking an exlir of life but in reality that illusional exlir was not of life but of death. She ended up dying not soon after drinking this. The open window gave Mrs. Mallard happiness by showing her a different world and she thought of it as an ascension in life. She ended up passing away not soon after and the life she saw through that open window was maybe scenes that people see when they know they’re about to die.
