Both women and men, have been brought up in a society that believes “straight hair is beautiful”. Women, especially, have been discriminated because of the texture of their hair whether its for a new job, a specific role or any major move in their life. Unfortunately, many women have fallen into this trap and have refused to embrace their natural roots. I, myself, was a part of this. I did not know what my natural texture was like since wearing it straight was all I knew. Growing up, my mom would always complain about me having “too much hair” so the easy way out was to straighten it. Whenever I would wear my hair curly, she would say “Arreglate ese pajon!” which translates to “fix that afro!”.
Back then, whenever my hair wasn’t straight, I didn’t feel beautiful. I felt as if everyone was just staring at my hair. I’ve had several encounters at my old job where my manager would make it clear that my hair needed to be “groomed”. Our society has created countless hair tools and products that will straighten your hair is less than 30 minutes! They’ve created blowdryers, curling irons, flatirons, hot rollers, heating brushes and a bunch of other items that change the texture of your natural hair.
However, thank God its 2017 and we have a growing Natural Hair Community that helps young girls and women embrace their natural hair whether its wavy, curly, super curly or kinky.
