Research Paper

Your mission is to write something which speaks to your rhetorical situation (same one from assignment 2) while considering matters such as your audience, purpose, form, real world implications/value. For instance, let’s say your rhetorical situation concerns the negative impact of social media on high school students. Your audience might be: students, parents of students, or educators. But let’s say your purpose is to curb the amount of time high school students spend on social media platforms and that you want to directly impact the way HS students interact with social media. This means that your audience are high school students. The question you want to consider then is: what media/writing do high school students consume? Chances are they aren’t reading formal academic research papers (let’s be real!). In reality the forms of writing they are really consuming are probably: narrative, personal essay (think blog), magazines, articles… Choose one of these forms to try to influence your reader. In each of these genres you’ll have plenty of model texts to choose from (this is part of building your mimetic practice). This part is key: Given your audience, you’ll have to choose the best style, tone, structure to reach and compel that audience (the spirit of rhetoric). You’ll adapt your research into a form (creative, traditional, hybrid) that is palatable to your specified audience.
