I found that after the writing mimesis, writing the teachable moment prompt became more fluid. I chose the poem “After great pain, a formal feeling comes” by Emily Dickinson for this exercise. This poem, in the way I interpret it, has a similar theme to the experience I chose to write about for my teachable moment. After 10 minutes, and rereading what I had just written, I think I really hung onto the last line of the poem and used it to lead the rest of my writing. The last line of this poem is, “First – Chill – then Stupor – then the letting go –”. I used “chill”, “stupor”, and “letting go” as the main ideas for each paragraph I wrote.
I decided for my writing hormesis I would bring my computer with me to the gym. Once I parked, I wrote for 10 minutes. I worked out and finished writing as soon as I got back to my car. I am usually in a really good mood after working out, and overall feel more motivated. I noticed that with the writing hormesis I wrote much more than I did with any of the other methods. I think I was able to dig deeper into my teachable moment using this method as well. I was thinking about more perspectives than my own, and how my presence fits into someone else’s view of the same situation I was writing about. This broadened my outlook and allowed me to write with more insight. I think out of all the methods, this one gave me the best results.
