Annette

Annette is the mother of the main character Antoinette who, by narration, characterizes her. She is the second wife of Antoinette’s father and not the biological mother of Antoinette. Her ethnicity is revealed by her being referred to as a “Martinique girl” in the opening passages of the story. Her youth and beauty leave her despised from the local community who mostly view her as being too young for Antoinette’s father.
