Bakary Kida – first draft

The fragmentary poem 26 written by Sappho an archaic Greek is a poem about how a person can be disappointed and seen herself vulnerable toward people she loved or cared about. The main character is harmed by unfair treatment premised upon traits or circumstances which do not relate to individual needs, capacities or merits. Furthermore base on the fragments in the poem we do not know that much about what she experienced.

Firstly, Sappho the archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos base on her lyric poetry is best known for her poem about love and women. Effectively, her poem 26 is a powerful story about the main character disappointment toward people she loved. Furthermore base on the fragments in the poem we are not able to know how hurt she is and what exactly they did to her. Sappho says “frequently for those I treat well are / harm me” (51). Disappointment especially from people who love can be expressed in both sorrow and anger. It is really difficult to experience this situation in life; we are always expecting or hoping gratefulness or reciprocity from our lover or people who have done well for them.

Secondly, the main character in this poem is an unhappy person who is suffering for being too nice by giving her heart and getting back that feeling of sadness or displeasure by the no fulfillment of her hope or expectation from people around her and seeing herself vulnerable. Sappho in this part of the poem let us understand her pain. Sappho says, “]harm me” (51).It is painful for not being treated ethically when you do thing with your heart to people you care about. With the description of the main character’s pain in the poem, Sappho tells a story base on the fragment, what caused her pain by granting how she wants to hurt those people who hurt her. She is describing how being nice can be bad for ourselves. Also, we are experiencing a fragment in this part of the poem we can’t be sure about what she meant but base on the her bad mood in the poem we understand she is expressing her anger .

this quality of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally plays an important role in the poem. Basically, you understand that feeling of regret and Sappho in this poem let us see in different way the main character seeing herself as her own devil. Sappho says.” I want to suffer” (51). People most of the time blame themselves when they get hurt by being too nice. Also Sappho creates great imagery in this fragmented poem by taking disappointment or vulnerability into a natural vengeance. She expresses her feelings change from hurt to anger and how heavy pain can really be. Sappho expresses her emotions in different directions. She emphasizes how she sees revenge as the ultimate goal in order to recover from her pain. Sappho says,”] you, I want to/] suffer” (51).Throughout the fragmented poem, Sappho expresses how someone else’s degrading behavior affect and how the man character handles that pain.

Definitely, in Sappho’s poem 26 appears awareness which is one of the biggest them of the poem. Awareness as the ability to directly and perceive, to feel, or to be cognizant events. The main character as a painful person only base on the fact that she has been such an ethical person is aware of what she experienced. Sappho says,”]in myself /aware of this” (51).Certainly, everybody make a mistake and learn from it. She is at that level where she learned from her mistake which was her vulnerability and she is taking action in order for her not to make the same mistake.  More broadly, it is for the main character the state of being conscious of something base on what she experienced. Sappho in this poem make it clear that ability to get the satisfaction from causing the source of the main character pain an equal amount of suffering she has gone through. In this poem, the main character is not asking for pity, but making a statement of how she gets over an emotional injury through physical movement. The theme awareness explains what the main character learn from her experience and also what is behind. Also, we are not able to tell clearly what happen after she decide to be aware of her experience because of the presence of the bracket with no explanation of what happened later but we base our understanding of the poem know the main character is explaining the different disposition she is taking in order to forever aware of this disloyalty. Sappho says,”]]]”(51).Likewise going thru this type of experience the only thing a person can thing is what to do to prevent the same situation in future. The main character feeling are as of that day as bitterness from a nice and lovely person to a mistrustful person because she may hurt people who sincerely love her only base of that bad experience.

Sappho’s poem 26 although fragmentary is a powerful story focused on the main character’s disappointment base on her vulnerability. The author in this poem led us to understand how harmed we can get from people who love the most. In addition the poem is a strong explanation of how a nice person can turn into bad just to the point of regretting whatever good she has done and want only to see people from who she got hurt suffering.    However, we can’t really be sure about our arguments because of the fragments in the poem. Nevertheless, we clearly understand the frustration in the poem because of what she experienced which explain her bad mood in the poem.
