What is an entrepreneur?

9/2/15

My definition of being an entrepreneur is having the innovation, ambition and courage to start your own business from the ground up, not always having a back-up plan. Entrepreneurs give everything to have their business succeed and have creative new ideas to set them apart from other similar businesses. Before reading the first chapter of the textbook I have always thought that to be an entrepreneur you have to have different types of businesses. From my point of view a small business owner is different because they can own a business without being creative, for example a franchise owner. A small business owner would have to have some characteristics of an entrepreneur because there are always risks but there does not have to be innovation.

When I started with my first daycare I expected and continue to expect to always be in control. Maybe because I like to interact with children and am committed to their safety and happiness, nevertheless, I would like to open a bigger center in which I am willing to share control to make more money as long as I am still able to oversee the wellbeing of the children. If that task is taken away I would lose the personal connection with my business and it will become just another paycheck.

Some growth issues entrepreneurs face are staying small because they do not want to lose control, or expose the business to many investors which become stockholders. In my opinion an entrepreneur should have a passion business and venture on to open other businesses that can build their wealth.

  1. Name three factors that impact how a new technological innovation fits existing market conditions
  • Path dependency: the future is an extension of the past, and you must take into account the history of developments that are already embedded in commerce. For example the keyboards. There have been other ones (that are even better) but nobody uses them because they are so used to QWERTY keyboards already.
  • Network effects which means that the more people use a service/product, the higher the value for the new users.
  • Government regulations

  1. Name 2 factors that impact the “market window of opportunity. “
  • The hype cycle
  • The technology adoption cycle

  1. Name a product that is currently being used by early adopters only.

I would say Apple Pay. It is available for customers to use since 2014. But only a few people are using it for now.

  1. Name 3 factors that impact how a new technological innovation fits existing market conditions.
  • Early users’ experience is rewarding and immediate

This is the point where the early users get that satisfaction that they were the first to try something once it is out. There are many people like this, They want to try it first and get that experience before others.

  • Early users discussing the needs and problems of the product with peers

This is the talking portion where the users share their experiences and get their thoughts on the product out to any one all around the world. It is like people go to see a movie and they write their thoughts about it.

  • Involving your early users in product or service development

This is where all the feed back is accumulated and changes are made to the product so that it can be the best it can be, and the early users feel that their feedback was valued by the product creators.

     3. Name 2 Factors that impact “market windows of opportunity.”

  • Experiment with early adapters as you polish your marketing plan

This is where businesses act on the reviews to make sure that the consumers are being marketed to correctly. It is important that the users are persuaded that they do need to buy this item.

  • Know where you are on the hype cycle as you promote your innovation

Being aware of where you are i n the cycle is important. This is so businesses know where they stand in inventing a new product and application and can make changes accordingly.

5.Name a product that is currently being used by early adopters only.

TECHNOLOGY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

There is a term for a new technological innovation that fits in an existing market and improves the company, it is called “going viral”. There are three factors that can have an impact on this.

The first are the early users experiences, they are usually satisfying and instantaneous. This makes the users to go back and repeat it.  They may also spread the word to friends and family, which leads to the friends and family spreading to others.

The second factor would be the users are member s of social clubs or online networks.  This allows users to share their experience and it does not constraint to location. This is another way how innovation can spread vastly.

The third factor would be getting the early users involved in the development of the product or service. This allows the company to get feedback.

There are two factors that impact the market window of opportunity.

The first factor will consist of conducting trials with the early adopters while you refine the marketing plan. This will allow you to find the needs of the users and create a better way of market.

The second factor includes the hype cycle, which is a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption and social application of specific technologies. Knowing where you are on this cycle can prevent you from setbacks.

A product that is currently being used by early adopters is Hoverboards.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

There are many reasons as to why social entrepreneurs do what they do. In this modern age, everyone is exposed through global media about the major challenges that the under developed countries face and also people that are underprivileged in the developed world. Some of these challenges are global warming, pollution, epidemics, chronic diseases, famine and others. These are the reasons social entrepreneurs do what they do.

The Green or cleantech ventures should be classified as social enterprises is because that they are still concerned about making the world a better place. The only difference is that they will be making a profit. If they reinvest the profit back into the company is totally up to them.

Some of the negative effects of being a social venture for nonprofit are growth and management challenges, hard to sustain and finally hard to acquire investments from investors.

Stakeholders view social ventures more differently is because it is not where you start a company and the goal is to make profits. The company must stick with the aligned goal it started with. Many of social ventures fail due to the fact that the derail from the goal they started with and the people that volunteers and donates stop. Without these, the social venture would fall apart.

Some of the growth challenges social venture face are growing too fast, where instead of being a social venture, ends up being like any other business. When hiring employees for social ventures, they are usually more followers than employees. These people actually care for the cause and would work way harder than a regular employee that just gets paid by the hour. Additionally, when the venture grows, communication tends to fall through the cracks.

  1. What is the primary driver of the social entrepreneur?

The social entrepreneur is mainly drove by the aim of making the world a better place, providing services or solutions that will help to reach their purpose.

  1. Should green or cleantech ventures be classified as social enterprises? If so, why?

I believe that Green or Cleantech ventures should be classified as social enterprises due to their aim to make the world environmentally cleaner at the same time taking advantage of it and making profits.

  1. What are some of the negatives of forming the social venture as a nonprofit?

About the negatives aspects of forming the social venture as a nonprofit, I would like to highlight the difficulties at the time of setting up the venture, such as time consuming, expensive costs, legal aspects and taxes.

  1. Why do stakeholders view the social venture differently from a traditional venture?

In my opinion this has to do with the point that social venture, gives the venture an added value since the main purpose it is not just making money but at the same time changing any issue to make the world better. This makes the stakeholder have another point of view for this kind of business that are socially involved with the environment.

  1. What are some of the growth challenges of a social venture?

I think probably one of the important challenges is the employees, because they are the base of the venture, and there is no doubt that to reach the social purposes of the venture, you need employees aligned with the idea and with a strong commitment to make it work.

Another challenge I can find is at the time of fund raising, where you need to convince investor not only that your business plan works but also about your social idea, how is it going to make the world better or how is it going to convincethe rest of the people.

  1. Differences between Social Entrepreneurship and CSR & Philonthropy

The first difference I can find is that CSR doesn’t need to be innovative as we learned a couple weeks ago that is one of the aspects of Entrepreneurship. The second one would be their respective purposes. In social entrepreneurship, the social mission has primacy and profits are means to reach this mission. it should, thus, be at least partly reinvested in the project rather than mainly appropriated by the shareholders. In corporations, however responsible, profit maximization remains the ultimate goal and is directed towards shareholder value appropriation.

Social Entrepreneurship

Primary driver of the social entrepreneur is to build a better society. Global media brings everything in front of us including all the major challenges that human beings are facing. We try to be part of the solution for issues such as underprivileged in the developed world, global warming, energy demands, wealth gaps, famine, pollution and so on. These issues drive us to become a social entrepreneur.

Green and clean tech should be considered as part of social entrepreneur movement. They are aiming for solving major issues such as pollution, global warming and resource conservation. These echoes with the primary driver of the social entrepreneur.

There are a few negatives about being a nonprofit.

  1. Lack of sustainability
  2. Lack of initiative
  3. Lack of growth opportunity

Stakeholders view the social venture differently from a traditional venture because markets do not work as well for social entrepreneurs. It is hard to value social entrepreneur since it is driven by the impact of the mission rather than by wealth creation.

There are also some major challenges for a social venture to grow,

  1. How to retain employees
  2. How to value their efforts
  3. How to stay on track with their initial mission plan

On the other hand, we can also see challenges and opportunities existed at the same time. Social ventures have opportunities that traditional ventures don’t have such as people who believe in the social mission of the venture tend to be willing to pay a higher price for products and services, employees who believe in the social mission will be more willing to work over time and put in extra effort.
